DESIGNER – ELECTRICAL
JOB SUMMARY
The Electrical Designer is a technical design professional who works with electrical engineers, other designers and multidisciplinary project teams in the development and delivery of electrical designs for mining, industrial and infrastructure projects. The Designer develops practical design solutions and prepares the associated drawings, layouts, models, schedules, material lists and other project deliverables.
Working with engineers and other project personnel as required, the Designer develops electrical designs based on project requirements, engineering criteria, equipment information, multidisciplinary inputs, applicable codes and standards, and site conditions. Engineers provide input on system configuration, equipment selection and ratings, protection requirements and other matters requiring professional engineering judgment. The Designer integrates these requirements into the design and develops the associated deliverables.
As experience and capability are demonstrated, the Designer assumes increasing responsibility for independently developing assigned designs, coordinating design activities and multidisciplinary interfaces, guiding drafting personnel and delivering assigned design scopes. Professional engineering responsibility and sealing of engineering documents remain with the responsible professional engineer.
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop electrical designs for mining, industrial and infrastructure projects using engineering direction, project requirements, equipment information and verified site conditions.
- Develop electrical equipment layouts, cable tray and conduit routing, lighting and grounding layouts, installation details and other electrical design information.
- Prepare and coordinate single line diagrams, schematics, cable schedules, equipment schedules, material lists, drawings and models in accordance with engineering direction and assigned design responsibilities.
- Apply an understanding of electrical system operation and installation requirements to develop practical, constructible and maintainable design solutions.
- Interpret and incorporate engineering calculations, design criteria, specifications, sketches, vendor drawings, field information and other project inputs into coordinated designs.
- Use AutoCAD and other applicable design software to develop and maintain electrical drawings and project deliverables.
- Develop and coordinate electrical design information within three dimensional project models where required by the project.
- Coordinate assigned design activities with drafters, engineers, vendors, contractors and other disciplines to identify and resolve spatial, access, interface and installation issues.
- Identify incomplete or conflicting information, resolve routine design matters within assigned responsibility and obtain engineering input where required.
- Develop coordinated drawing packages that communicate the design for engineering, procurement and construction purposes.
- Participate in design and model reviews and incorporate review comments into assigned deliverables.
- Support field investigations and verification of existing conditions, and incorporate verified information into project designs.
- Participate in construction support, installation, testing and commissioning activities as required by the assignment.
- Check drawings, models, schedules and other design deliverables appropriate to experience and assigned responsibility.
- Provide guidance to drafting personnel and less experienced designers as capability and assigned responsibility increase.
- Consider applicable codes, standards and jurisdictional requirements, referring matters of interpretation and engineering compliance to the responsible engineer.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of a recognized electrical engineering technician or technologist program, or a related program that supports eligibility for a C.Tech. or C.E.T. designation.
- Currently working toward a C.Tech. or C.E.T. designation in Ontario, or an equivalent designation in another jurisdiction, or eligible to obtain such a designation.
- Electrical design experience appropriate to a developing or practicing Designer. Experience in mining,
industrial or infrastructure projects is considered an asset.
- Experience with, or the ability to develop proficiency in, AutoCAD and applicable electrical design software.
- Experience with three dimensional modelling and Autodesk Revit is considered an asset where applicable to project delivery.
- Understanding of electrical equipment installations, power distribution, cable systems, lighting, grounding and related design practices appropriate to the candidate’s experience.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to research and apply, applicable electrical codes, standards and jurisdictional requirements.
- Ability to interpret engineering criteria, equipment information, vendor documentation and field conditions and translate them into practical design solutions.
- Ability to work effectively in both SI and Imperial units.
- Strong spatial awareness, technical aptitude, organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers, designers, drafters and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Ability to work independently within assigned design responsibilities while recognizing matters requiring professional engineering judgment, review or approval.
