An opportunity to lead with impact

Castlegar Community Services Society (CCSS) is seeking an experienced, collaborative Interim Executive Director to provide strategic and executive leadership during a maternity leave.

Serving Castlegar and surrounding districts, CCSS is a unionized nonprofit organization with approximately 40 staff delivering 19 programs and supporting more than 2,000 individuals annually. Our services include housing and homelessness supports, counselling, family and youth services, seniors' services, community transportation, and outreach.

This is a meaningful part-time leadership opportunity for someone who enjoys supporting capable leaders, working with a committed Board, and advancing important community initiatives during a period of organizational growth and development.

The role

Reporting to the Board of Directors, you will supervise and mentor our Director of Operations and Director of Finance, who oversee day-to-day operations and financial management. You will focus your time on executive accountability, Board governance, complex organizational matters, and active leadership of strategic priorities.

CCSS will establish a prioritized work plan identifying one or two key strategic initiatives for the Interim Executive Director to actively advance during the appointment.

- Support and coach two Directors, balancing empowerment with explicit expectations and accountability.
- Lead Board reporting, governance support, strategic oversight, and significant organizational decisions.
- Provide executive guidance on complex HR and labour relations matters, legal issues, and major risks.
- Oversee significant financial decisions and contracts in partnership with the Director of Finance.
- Actively advance priority organizational development initiatives, strategic partnerships, collaborative opportunities, and significant capital or growth projects.
- Lead CCSS's Coldest Night of the Year fundraising initiative through a volunteer planning committee, and support longer-term revenue diversification.

What you bring

- Substantial senior leadership experience; previous Executive Director experience is preferred.
- Experience in nonprofit or community social services is strongly preferred, although relevant leadership experience in healthcare, government, housing, or related sectors is welcome.
- Experience leading organizational change, partnerships, or strategic initiatives is strongly preferred.
- Union/labour relations experience is strongly preferred; strong executive-level HR experience will also be considered.

- Relevant post-secondary education or an equivalent combination of education and significant leadership experience.
- Sound judgment, financial literacy, Board governance awareness, discretion, and an empowering, accountable leadership style.

Schedule and location

This is a temporary, part-time employee position of 21 hours per week, with the possibility of additional hours based on organizational needs and mutual agreement.

The initial appointment is for 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to a total of 18 months, depending on organizational needs and maternity leave arrangements.

A hybrid arrangement is available, with regular in-person meetings in Castlegar and attendance at monthly evening Board meetings. Limited emergency availability outside scheduled hours may be required; all hours worked are compensated.

A two-week transition is planned for early January 2027, ahead of a mid-January leave start.

How to apply

Please submit a resume and brief statement of interest describing your relevant leadership experience and interest in the opportunity.

Application deadline: November 13, 2026

Apply to: [email protected]

Applications will be reviewed following the closing date. CCSS reserves the right to continue accepting applications until the position is filled.
