Crown Paper Group

Crown Paper Group (“Crown”) is a leading independent regional containerboard business. Crown operates an integrated containerboard mill, converting facilities, and company-operated distribution centers, and has a strategic presence in the growing markets of the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada. Crown’s facilities include:

- Port Townsend Paper Mill in Port Townsend, WA — producing kraft pulp, kraft paper, containerboard, and specialty products. The mill has operated continuously for over 90 years.
- Crown Packaging in Richmond, BC, including Viking/Crown North and the 6RD warehouse — an integrated manufacturer and marketer of corrugated cartons and sheets, printed paper wraps, and wallboard tape, supported by sales offices and distribution centers in Kelowna, BC, Calgary, AB, and Edmonton, AB.
- BoxMaster in Vancouver, BC — an established manufacturer of corrugated products for a wide variety of end markets.

The Canada IT team is dedicated to creating an engaging and positive work environment, preserving the environment, and being a good neighbour and valued member of the local community. Many of our employees have spent the greater part of their careers here — we have team members with 20 to 35 years of service.

Function & Scope: The Business Application Analyst will partner with business users to understand processes, define requirements, improve reporting and support Crown’s business systems. Structured training and mentorship will build knowledge of critical systems and complete systems landscape, including OpenVMS and Cognos PowerHouse. At least 85% of the work is business analysis and application support. Other duties involve occasional service-desk coverage supporting Canada personnel with issue triage, basic troubleshooting, and end-user guidance. Infrastructure and device issues will be coordinated with the appropriate IT resources. Workstation imaging and routine device deployment are not core responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Business Applications & Systems Analysis

- Learn, document, and support Crown’s proprietary and packaged business systems, including OpenVMS applications, Cognos PowerHouse, and packaged MES software provided by Kiwiplan.
- Serve as a developing subject matter expert for assigned business systems, providing functional support, issue diagnosis, and resolution to business users.
- Design, build, and support custom reports and data integration between business systems.
- Document business processes and decision support tools, identifying opportunities for improvement, simplification, and standardization. Where possible, work with upstream and downstream groups to ensure processes are optimized end-to-end.
- Assist in developing and maintaining application roadmaps and integration diagrams,

and in understanding how Crown’s systems share data with other internal and external systems.
- Support business application projects through analysis, design, build, test, release, and post-implementation support, partnering with business and IT resources on requirements gathering and data integration requirements.
- Assist in the creation and use of standardized software development lifecycle (SDLC) documentation so that findings and process improvements are sustained across the enterprise.
- Participate in the evaluation and research of packaged systems and software to help ensure Crown maintains best-in-class systems that continuously improve productivity and decision support.

Occasional Service Desk & End User Support

- Provide occasional service-desk coverage and end-user guidance for Canada personnel.
- Triage and document support requests, resolve straightforward issues, and coordinate escalation to the appropriate IT resources while maintaining focus on business-analysis priorities.
- Provide off-hours support when urgently needed, in support of a continuous manufacturing operation.

Knowledge Transfer & Development

- Participate in structured mentorship with experienced colleagues, with defined milestones for system-by-system learning and knowledge sharing.
- Build and maintain durable documentation — runbooks, system inventories, process maps, and support procedures — that strengthens shared knowledge of critical systems across the IT department.
- Progressively take ownership of assigned systems as proficiency develops, to become Crown’s primary subject matter expert for those applications.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- A two-year computer degree, or equivalent education or experience in an engineering, technology, or business-related field.
- One to three years of experience in business systems support or IT business analysis, with demonstrated involvement in requirements gathering, process improvement, reporting, or application projects. We will consider an equivalent combination of relevant education and demonstrated experience.
- Experience gathering, analyzing, and documenting business requirements and translating them into clear functional specifications or process maps.
- Experience investigating application or data issues, validating solutions, and supporting user acceptance testing and end-user training.

- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Office applications.
- Foundational knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts, with a willingness to develop reporting and query skills.
- A working understanding of hardware and software system design, operating systems, application software, networks, and IT security fundamentals.
- Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to organize and present technical information clearly to non-technical users.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, manage multiple concurrent tasks, maintain attention to detail, and recognize time constraints.
- A demonstrated willingness to learn specialized business systems

Preferred Qualifications

- Exposure to Cognos PowerHouse or OpenVMS — including DCL command procedures, batch job management, application support, or reporting — is an asset.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or business administration.
- Experience or solid familiarity with procedural programming languages or design patterns, e.g., conditional statements, looping statements, using input forms to retrieve and write data, etc.
- Experience with business systems in a manufacturing or process industry environment.
- Experience with one or more Microsoft reporting solutions (e.g., Power BI, SSRS) and with relational database design.
- Programming or scripting experience in SQL and either PHP or Python.
- Advanced Excel skills — formulas, functions, macros.
- Experience defining functional requirements for software system selection, or data integration requirements between systems and external partners.
- Experience supporting users in an industrial or plant-floor setting.
