Embedded Firmware Developer (Intermediate to Senior)
Spyder Controls Corp.
Location: McBride, BC (In person)
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: $75,000–$115,000 per year
About Spyder Controls
Spyder Controls develops innovative control systems for the RV and marine industries. Our products combine embedded firmware, hardware, communication networks, and user interfaces to deliver integrated control solutions.
We are looking for Embedded Firmware Developers to join our growing team. We are open to candidates ranging from Intermediate Developer I through Senior Developer I, with placement based on demonstrated technical ability, experience, independence, and ownership.
This is an opportunity to work hands-on with embedded systems, solve challenging technical problems, and grow into greater technical responsibility as your skills develop.
What You'll Do
Depending on your experience and level, your responsibilities may include:
- Develop, maintain, debug, and test embedded firmware for RV and marine control systems.
- Write clean, readable, maintainable, and testable code.
- Troubleshoot issues involving firmware, hardware, and communication networks.
- Work with communication protocols such as I²C, SPI, UART, CAN, USB, RV-C, NMEA 2000, J1939, LIN, and RS-232.
- Read and interpret component datasheets, electrical schematics, and technical documentation.
- Develop bare-metal firmware or work with real-time operating systems such as FreeRTOS.
- Analyze logs, traces, system behaviour, and hardware interactions to identify root causes.
- Collaborate with hardware, testing, project management, and development team members to deliver reliable products.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to development standards and software quality.
- Create and maintain technical documentation for firmware, features, and system behaviour.
- Estimate development work and communicate progress, risks, and potential schedule concerns.
- Translate requirements into practical technical solutions.
- Take ownership of development tasks and, at higher levels, deliver features from definition through release.
- Support integration activities and customer-related technical issues when required.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced developers as appropriate to your level.
- Take on increasingly complex technical challenges, including issues spanning multiple software modules and system components.
What We're Looking For
We are considering candidates at different stages of their embedded firmware careers. Relevant qualifications and experience include:
- Professional experience developing software or firmware.
- Hands-on experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers, or hardware and software integration.
- Strong programming skills in C and/or C++.
- Ability to understand, debug, modify, and maintain existing code.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
- Understanding of software and firmware development practices, including version control, testing, documentation, and code reviews.
- Ability to work with hardware and firmware together to diagnose system-level issues.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to producing reliable firmware.
- Ability to work independently while recognizing when to seek guidance or escalate issues.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to estimate work, manage priorities, and communicate potential delays.
Experience and Technical Expectations by LevelIntermediate Developer I
Candidates at this level should demonstrate the ability to work independently on defined development tasks and take increasing ownership of feature delivery.
Expected capabilities include:
- Owning features and working across multiple areas of a system.
- Identifying integration risks and resolving technical issues.
- Developing technical designs and specifications.
- Solving problems that span multiple software modules.
- Making sound technical decisions and communicating their rationale.
- Taking responsibility for delivering reliable, tested solutions.
Senior Developer I
Senior-level candidates should demonstrate strong technical independence, system-level understanding, and ownership of complex development work.
Key expectations include:
- Electrical fundamentals: Read electrical schematics, understand power and signal flow, and recognize abnormal hardware behaviour.
- Embedded hardware experience: Bring up circuit boards, configure peripherals using datasheets, and validate signal behaviour on the bench.
- Qualified experience: Typically five or more years of software development experience, with strong C programming skills and Git experience.
- Communication protocols: Deep understanding of CAN, including the physical layer, error handling, bus timing, and network management for RV-C and NMEA 2000.
- Technical communication: Clearly explain firmware decisions and technical issues to hardware developers, project managers, and customers.
Candidates do not need to meet every responsibility or qualification listed above. Final placement will depend on demonstrated skills, experience, independence, problem-solving ability, and technical ownership.
Nice to Have
Experience or familiarity with any of the following would be an asset:
- Eclipse or STM32CubeIDE
- Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio
- Git or GitHub
- Graphics or user interface design
What Success Looks Like
At Spyder Controls, career progression is based on demonstrated capability rather than simply time in a position.
As you grow in the role, you will progress from independently completing defined development work to owning feature
