About the Opportunity
Children Matter Community Services (CMCS) is seeking a compassionate, dependable Youth Support Worker with specialized skills in autism-informed behavioural support to work in one of our staffed homes.
You will support a young person with autism and behavioural support needs to feel safe, understood, and included. This role calls for someone who can build trust, recognize what a young person may be communicating through their behaviour, and use individualized, proactive strategies to support regulation, communication, and participation.
You will help with daily routines, life skills, emotional regulation, and community involvement while encouraging the young person’s independence and amplifying their voice. Experience adapting support to a young person’s communication style, sensory needs, strengths, and interests is important.
Our work is guided by our values of Integrity, Respect, Transparency, Advocacy, and Acceptance. We are committed to compassionate, relationship-based care and to creating an equitable society where no one is left behind.
What you will do
- Build a trusting, respectful relationship with the youth and support their choices, strengths, goals, and participation in daily life.
- Follow individualized support and behavioural plans consistently, using proactive, autism-informed strategies.
- Support communication, emotional regulation, transitions, sensory needs, and daily routines in ways that are responsive to the young person.
- Notice and consider what may be contributing to distress or changes in behaviour, and respond calmly and respectfully.
- Use positive, least-restrictive approaches to support safety and reduce escalation, following CMCS policies and the youth’s plans.
- Help the youth develop life skills, including personal hygiene, cooking, shopping, money management, and personal safety.
- Support social connection, physical wellness, recreation,
and community involvement at the youth’s pace and in ways that reflect their interests.
- Participate in assessments, goal setting, and care planning with the Residence Coordinator, Program Manager, youth, and their support network.
- Accompany or transport the youth to school, appointments, recreation, employment, and community activities.
- Recognize emerging safety concerns and respond to distress, escalation, or emergencies using established protocols.
- Administer, monitor, and store medications in accordance with CMCS policies.
- Maintain a safe, supportive home environment and follow individual care plans and health and safety procedures.
- Complete factual, respectful, and accurate documentation, including observations relevant to the youth’s support plan, and promptly communicate changes or concerns to program leadership.
- Contribute to a collaborative team through explicit communication, reliable follow-through, and participation in training and staff meetings.
Who will thrive in this role
You are patient, observant, and dependable. You understand that behaviour can communicate unmet needs, stress, discomfort, or difficulty with communication, and you are interested in understanding the person behind it. You can remain calm during challenging moments, follow plans consistently, and adjust your approach to the young person’s needs.
You have experience supporting children with autism, FASD, and ADHD. You can apply practical strategies related to communication, sensory needs, transitions, routines,
and emotional regulation. You work respectfully with the young person’s support network and welcome coaching and feedback. You balance empathy with clear, consistent boundaries and recognize that small, everyday moments can make a meaningful difference.
Requirements
- A certificate or diploma in human services, behavioural support, autism studies, early childhood education, or a related field.
