Working closely with Urban Solar’s cross-functional team, the Financial Controller will play a key role in realizing Urban Solar’s mission.

The Opportunity:

Urban Solar is seeking a Financial Controller to lead its finance and accounting function, support cross-border operations, and further digital transformation. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Controller will be a key leader responsible for accounting operations, compliance, financial planning, system optimization, and operational decision support. This is a high-impact role for a finance professional who brings strong accounting fundamentals, a systems mindset, and a collaborative approach.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Operations & Cashflow

- Oversee and maintain full-cycle accounting operations: AP/AR, payroll, inventory & production costing, bank reconciliations, and month-end close
- Maintain short- and long-term cash flow forecasts and treasury oversight
- Ensure correct intercompany accounting between Canadian and U.S. entities
- Collaborate with Operations, Sales, and Engineering departments to evaluate the cash flow impacts of procurement and fulfilment of orders

Compliance & Reporting

- Manage year-end review engagement and tax filings, ensuring regulatory compliance
- Manage sales tax filings and ensure accuracy in U.S. and Canadian tax obligations (U.S. sales tax experience is a plus)
- Process and present monthly internal KPI reports and operational recommendations to the CEO and ownership group




- Oversee ongoing financial compliance requirements as the company undergoes operational changes and growth

Financial Strategy & Leadership

- Lead financial reporting, planning, budgeting, and forecasting for the CEO and ownership group
- Advise the CEO and senior leadership on performance metrics, risks, and opportunities
- Support cross-functional decision-making with financial analysis and reporting
- Identify opportunities to implement recent processes and improve efficiency of existing processes

System Optimization

- Take ownership of Urban Solar’s ERP and accounting system (Sage Intacct) and continue to improve upon the utilization of the system
- Improve automated processes for reporting, reconciliations, and internal controls
- Improve financial data visibility through dashboards and custom reporting tools within Sage Intacct
- Work with other departments and external consultants to build custom reports and tools as needed to support operational efficiency

Administration & People Management

- Manage one direct report (Bookkeeping and Administrative Coordinator)
- Take ownership of administrative functions where needed
- Support the management team by suggesting policy improvements; provide feedback on operational changes; and support other managers in problem solving

Work Eligibility:

Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada on a permanent and unrestricted basis (e.g., Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or holder of an open work permit with no employer restrictions). Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Requirements:

- 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting, financial management or controllership




- Experience with accounting functions in a manufacturing or growth-stage company
- Strong understanding of Canadian GAAP (ASPE) and intercompany accounting
- Experience with ERP implementations or strong experience maintaining and establishing procedures within an ERP system
- Proficient in Excel and financial management tools; Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar
- Knowledge of U.S. sales tax compliance is a strong asset
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- CPA designation is preferred

Location:

This position is based at Urban Solar’s head office in downtown Victoria, BC. After the first year of employment, a hybrid working arrangement is possible.

Salary:

Starting salary: $90,000-$110,000/year. For exceptional candidates with extensive ERP and resource planning experience, a higher starting salary may be considered.
