Job DescriptionJob Description
About the Role
This is a net new role created inside a major energy infrastructure organization in direct response to a compressing threat and recovery landscape across the industry. The organization is moving beyond traditional disaster recovery toward resilience by design, building recoverability and defense directly into the technology architecture at scale rather than relying on manual processes developed system by system. The Portfolio Architect, Technology Resilience owns the roadmap, standards, and target-state architecture for that capability, working alongside in-house domain architects across cloud, security, and network, and the execution teams that carry designs forward. This is strictly an architectural and oversight seat, not a hands-on implementation role.
The strongest fit here is someone who thinks in systems rather than silos. Disaster recovery and Zero Trust are the two highest priorities, followed by minimum viable operations planning and business continuity. Full-stack scope matters: application and information architecture sit alongside infrastructure, network, and cloud. Deep mastery of every domain is not the expectation; the ability to connect dependencies across all of them is. Equally significant is the ability to influence technical direction across teams without formal authority and to translate complex architectural concepts clearly for executive and non-technical audiences. Communication and influence carry at least as much weight as any single technical pillar.
Key Responsibilities
1. Define and maintain the target-state architecture, standards, and roadmap for technology resilience across the enterprise portfolio
2. Lead architectural design and oversight across disaster recovery,
Zero Trust, minimum viable operations, and business continuity pillars, connecting infrastructure, network, cloud, and application layers
3. Partner with the Chief Architect and domain architects in cloud, security, network, ICS/SCADA, and platform engineering to align resilience designs with broader enterprise architecture
4. Identify systemic dependencies and architectural weak points across individual applications and shared services, providing a portfolio-level view of recovery posture
5. Influence technical direction and resolve genuine disagreement between teams with differing opinions, without holding direct authority over execution teams
6. Communicate architectural strategies, risk positions, and recovery objectives clearly to executive leadership and non-technical stakeholders
7. Establish and govern resilience standards, recovery tiers, RTO and RPO targets, backup and immutability requirements, and Zero Trust controls across identity, network segmentation, and endpoints
8. Support governance and standards work, including review boards and audit-ready documentation of architectural decisions and controls
Required Skills & Experience
- 10 or more years of progressive experience in architecture, engineering, infrastructure, cloud, or reliability engineering,
with meaningful time at a portfolio or enterprise level spanning multiple programs
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline; equivalent experience of 10 or more years considered in lieu of a degree
- Demonstrated architectural and strategic-level experience, not primarily hands-on implementation
- Breadth across the resilience domain, particularly disaster recovery and Zero Trust, with systems-level thinking that connects infrastructure, network, cloud, and application dependencies
- A specific, demonstrable example of influencing technical direction across teams without formal authority
- Demonstrated ability to explain complex technical concepts simply to non-technical and executive audiences
- Must be eligible to work in Canada without restriction
- Must be based in the Calgary area and able to work onsite Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; remote and relocating candidates are not in scope
Preferred Skills
- Cybersecurity and identity exposure, including close familiarity with a security function
- AWS experience; the organization runs approximately 98% of cloud infrastructure in AWS, though candidates with strong cloud fundamentals from any major platform remain in scope
- ServiceNow experience, including the Business Continuity module
- Background in energy, utilities, or other regulated critical infrastructure, with demonstrated engagement complexity rather than straightforward single-threaded project history
- Infrastructure or network background as a foundation, with cloud and application exposure layered on top
- Governance and audit experience, including review boards, standards work, and evidence packages that hold up under audit
📌 Architect (Solution, Network, Infrastructure, Telecom, etc.) (Senior)
