Senior Network Engineer (Contract)
Remote within Saskatchewan, Canada- 6-Month Contract
We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Network Engineer to support a major infrastructure project in Saskatchewan. This contract opportunity is ideal for a hands-on network skilled who thrives in designing, building, and implementing enterprise-grade network solutions in complex and industrial environments.
Candidates must be currently based in Saskatchewan. While the role is primarily remote, occasional travel to project sites may be required.
Role Overview
Reporting to the IT Manager, the Senior Network Engineer is responsible for delivering the enterprise connectivity upgrade at the Rook I project and designing the OT/IT network for permanent infrastructure — the physical and logical backbone that every system at site will eventually depend on. This is an end-to-end role: the Senior Network Engineer is accountable for both the design and the implementation of the network, designing, building, configuring, and commissioning the connectivity and OT/IT network.
This is a hands-on role requiring deep network, with accountability for delivering resilient, secure connectivity in a remote, greenfield environment. The role works directly with NexGen’s site engineering and EPCM teams, ensuring connectivity and network design are integrated into the wider construction and operational plan. The successful candidate will take a proactive, security-first approach, operating independently while collaborating with internal stakeholders and external partners.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES (including But Not Limited To)
- Deliver the enterprise connectivity upgrade at Rook I, managing the enterprise grade connectivity hardware investment — including load balancing and failover — to establish a resilient network.
- Design the OT/IT network for permanent infrastructure, producing a network design that scales from construction through to production operation.
- Build out the onsite OT and IT network ahead of fibre delivery, ensuring network segments, switching,
and cabling are in place and ready to integrate with permanent fibre connectivity once it is live.
- Implement, configure, and commission the network, turning designs into deployed, tested, and operational connectivity, owned through to handover into operations.
- Specify, source, and oversee the installation and commissioning of connectivity and network hardware at site, sequencing onsite work with construction and site-readiness timelines.
- Act as the connectivity liaison with site engineering teams, translating operational requirements into network requirements.
- Implement the site security framework, applying network segmentation and access controls in line with the baseline defined with the Senior Infrastructure & Cloud Engineer.
- Progressively bring network operations currently delivered by NexGen’s external providers in-house, coordinating with those providers through the transition and building lasting internal capability.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, procedures, and standards.
Education And Experience
- 7+ years experience in network engineering (or equivalent hands-on expertise), ideally in industrial, mining, energy, or comparably demanding environments
- Strong experience designing, building, and operating enterprise networks, including:
- Firewalls, switching, and wireless access points (Fortinet and Cisco Meraki preferred), with breadth beyond NexGen’s current tooling
- VLANs, routing, network segmentation, and resilient connectivity (load balancing and failover)
- OT and its integration into the IT network
- Demonstrated ability to both design and personally implement, configure, and commission networks,
rather than only specifying work for others to build
- Strong fibre understanding, including fibre design, integration, and delivery to a remote site
- Experience specifying, sourcing, and overseeing the installation and commissioning of enterprise network hardware at physical sites
- Comfort delivering connectivity in remote or greenfield locations, coordinating with construction and engineering teams
- Working knowledge of network security controls and access controls appropriate to a regulated operating environment
- Strong troubleshooting and documentation skills
- Relevant post secondary education (degree or diploma), or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience
- Relevant network certifications (e.g., Fortinet NSE, Cisco CCNP/CCIE, Cisco Meraki) considered an asset
