Role summary

Own core product and platform engineering for Buffer's lending and employer experience. You will design, build, and operate services that power applications, underwriting-adjacent workflows, repayments, and employer tooling. This is a senior IC role on a small team: you ship end to end, set engineering standards, and mentor as we grow.

Responsibilities

- Design and ship backend services, APIs, and integrations that support loan applications, decisions, payouts, and instalment repayments
- Build and maintain production systems with clear observability, testing, and safe deploy practices




- Partner with product and founders on scope, tradeoffs, and delivery plans
- Improve reliability, security, and data handling for financial workflows
- Review code, document architecture decisions, and raise the quality bar across the codebase
- Help hire and onboard the next engineers as the team grows

Requirements

- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Solid experience with at least one modern backend language (for example Python, TypeScript/Node, Go, or Java)
- Production experience with relational databases, REST or GraphQL APIs, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Track record of owning features from design through production support
- Comfort working in a regulated or financially sensitive domain, or clear willingness to learn compliance constraints
- Excellent written communication; able to explain tradeoffs to non-engineers
- Authorized to work in Canada; based in Canada (BC preferred)

Nice to haves

- Fintech, lending, payments, or banking experience
- Experience with event-driven systems, queues, or workflow engines
- Frontend fluency (React or similar) for full-stack delivery
- Prior early-stage startup experience
