Company Description Uyir Lab is an AI research lab focused on making AI agents accurate in underrepresented languages, as they are truly spoken in everyday life. The lab addresses gaps in dialects, code-mixing, and cultural context for languages that are widely spoken but barely present on the web, starting with Tamil and expanding to Sinhala, Punjabi, Swahili, Hausa, Amharic, Fula, Oromo, Javanese, Bhojpuri, and more. Uyir Lab’s approach combines consented voice data from native speakers, deep linguistic mapping, and proprietary models like Nila for Tamil, delivered via a “Language Brain” layer that plugs into existing AI agents.

As AI takes on critical work in sectors such as banking, health, and customer service, Uyir Lab’s mission is to reduce costly misunderstandings and give every language a life in AI, working closely with agent builders, native speakers, and community partners.

Role Description The Head of Machine Learning is a full-time remote role leading the design, development, and deployment of language-focused ML systems across Uyir Lab’s growing portfolio of models and languages. This position oversees end-to-end machine learning pipelines: defining research directions, shaping model architectures, guiding experimentation, and driving productionization of models for real-world AI agents. The role includes managing and mentoring a multidisciplinary ML team, collaborating with data engineers and linguists to build high-quality datasets, and ensuring robust evaluation for dialect-aware,



culturally grounded performance.

The Head of Machine Learning partners with product and engineering teams to integrate Uyir Lab’s “Language Brain” into external applications, sets technical standards for scalability and reliability, and contributes to strategic decisions about current languages, platforms, and partnerships.

Qualifications

- Strong foundations in Computer Science, including algorithms, data structures, distributed computing, and software engineering best practices.
- Expertise in Machine Learning and Data Science, covering model development, training at scale, evaluation, optimization, and experimentation workflows.
- Specialized experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP), particularly for low-resource or multilingual settings, including sequence models, transformers, and representation learning.
- Hands-on skills in Pattern Recognition, statistical modeling, and signal processing methods relevant to speech, text, and multimodal data.
- Proficiency with modern ML ecosystems (e.g., Python, PyTorch or TensorFlow, Hugging Face, ML Ops tools) and cloud-based training infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience leading ML or research teams, setting technical direction, and delivering production-ready models in collaboration with product and engineering.
- Background in building or improving language technologies (ASR, MT, chatbots, dialogue systems, or language understanding) is highly beneficial.
