Heavy Equipment Technician Apprentice (2nd or 3rd Year) – Power Generation Field Service
Company: Gentech Field Services Ltd.
Location: Calgary, Alberta
Build a Career in Power Generation. Work on High-Horsepower Engines.
Are you a 2nd or 3rd Year Heavy Equipment Technician Apprentice who enjoys working on large diesel engines, troubleshooting mechanical problems, and learning new skills?
Gentech Field Services Ltd. is looking for a motivated apprentice to join our Calgary-based field service team, working on high-horsepower diesel and natural gas engines that provide essential power to hospitals, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and critical infrastructure.
We are not a heavy-duty truck repair shop. We specialize in commercial and industrial generators, emergency standby power systems, and diesel fire pumps.
Our work goes beyond dismantling and rebuilding engines. We inspect, maintain, diagnose, troubleshoot, test, and repair equipment to ensure it operates reliably when needed.
Previous generator experience is not required, but a genuine interest in power generation and a willingness to learn this specialized industry are essential.
About Gentech Field Services
Gentech Field Services is a Calgary-based company providing specialized power generation services throughout Alberta.
We support commercial, industrial, institutional, and construction clients through preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, repairs, load bank testing, installations, commissioning, and emergency service.
Our clients depend on us to keep their critical power systems operating safely and reliably.
What You'll Be Doing
Working alongside experienced Journeyman Technicians, you will gain hands-on experience in:
- Performing preventative maintenance and inspections on diesel and natural gas generators and diesel fire pumps.
- Diagnosing, troubleshooting, servicing, and repairing engines and related systems.
- Inspecting and repairing fuel, cooling, exhaust, starting, and control systems.
- Assisting with generator load bank testing, commissioning, and operational testing.
- Learning applicable CSA C282 inspection and maintenance requirements.
- Reading service manuals, technical diagrams, and manufacturer specifications.
- Completing accurate service reports and maintenance documentation.
- Attending client sites and assisting with emergency service calls when required.
- Maintaining safe work practices and a clean, organized work environment.
This is a varied field service role involving mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic work, offering the opportunity to develop skills beyond traditional engine repair.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Registered 2nd or 3rd Year Heavy Equipment Technician Apprentice.
- Must own a set of tools appropriate to your apprenticeship level.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and basic knowledge of diesel engines.
- Genuine interest in power generation and developing specialized technical skills.
- Dependable, punctual, and willing to learn and take direction.
- Ability to work independently when appropriate and as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills for electronic service documentation.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with a clean driver's abstract.
Experience That Would Be an Advantage:
- Diesel engine maintenance, diagnostics, or repairs.
- Heavy equipment or industrial engine experience.
- Field service or electrical troubleshooting experience.
- Familiarity with generators, electronic diagnostic tools, or control systems.
We are willing to train the right apprentice who has a solid mechanical foundation, a positive attitude, and a genuine interest in the industry.
Why Choose Power Generation?
Power generation offers the opportunity to work on powerful industrial engines, advanced control systems, and equipment that plays an essential role in keeping businesses and critical facilities operating.
Rather than working on the same type of equipment every day, you will gain exposure to different manufacturers, engine sizes, technologies, and customer environments.
You will develop a combination of mechanical, electrical, and troubleshooting skills while learning from experienced technicians in a specialized industry.
What We Offer
- Competitive apprentice wages based on experience and apprenticeship level.
- Overtime opportunities.
- Comprehensive health and dental benefits.
- On-the-job mentorship and technical training.
- Manufacturer and factory training opportunities.
- Long-term career development and advancement opportunities.
- Supportive team environment.
- Company events, disability & life insurance, paid time off, vision care, on-site parking.
Physical and Work Requirements
- Ability to safely lift, move, and handle tools and equipment.
- Comfortable working in mechanical rooms, industrial facilities, construction sites, and outdoor environments.
- Ability to kneel, crouch, climb, and work in restricted spaces when required.
- Willingness to assist with after-hours service when required.
- Ability to work safely in varying weather conditions.
Interested? Tell Us Why.
We are looking for an apprentice who wants to develop a career in power generation, not simply move into another mechanical position.
When applying, please submit your resume and briefly answer the questions.
A formal cover letter is not necessary. A few genuine sentences explaining your interest are all we ask.
If you are specifically looking for traditional truck shop work, this may not be the right position for you. However, if you enjoy diesel engines, troubleshooting, field service, and learning new technical skills, we encourage you to apply.
We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
