POSITION SUMMARY The Windows, Entrance Doors & Patio Doors Service Technician professionally inspects, diagnoses, services, repairs, and adjusts residential windows, entrance doors, and patio doors at customer locations. The Service Technician must be capable of determining whether a reported issue is related to the product, installation, adjustment, hardware, glazing, weather sealing, building conditions, or customer use. A critical responsibility of this position is to accurately verify that windows, entrance doors, and patio doors are plumb, level, and square, and operate as intended, before determining the cause of a service issue. The technician represents the company directly in customers' homes and on job sites and is expected to maintain a high standard of professionalism, workmanship, safety, cleanliness, and customer service at all times.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Product Inspection & Diagnosis
- Inspect windows, entrance doors, patio doors, glass, screens, hardware, weatherstripping, frames, sashes, panels, thresholds, and related components.
- Accurately diagnose the root cause of reported service issues before beginning repairs.
- Distinguish between manufacturing defects, installation issues, adjustment requirements, normal product characteristics, building conditions, damage, and improper use.
- Follow a systematic diagnostic process rather than replacing parts without confirming the cause of the problem.
- Identify recurring product or installation problems and report findings to management.
- Take clear photographs and measurements to document service conditions. Plumb, Level & Square Verification The Service Technician must be proficient in verifying the installation condition of windows and doors using appropriate measuring equipment. Technicians are expected to:
- Check jambs and frames for plumb using an appropriate level or approved measuring device.
- Check sills, thresholds, and frames for level.
- Check frames for square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner and comparing measurements.
- Verify frame width and height at multiple locations where appropriate.
- Check for bowed, twisted, racked, or distorted frames.
- Check that jambs remain parallel and are not pulled inward or pushed outward by fasteners or improper shimming.
- Verify appropriate shimming and fastening locations where accessible.
- Check sash, slab, or panel reveals for consistency.
- Verify that operating panels are correctly aligned within their frames.
- Determine whether an out-of-square, out-of-level, or out-of-plumb opening is contributing to operational problems.
- Document measurements when installation conditions are suspected of causing a service issue.
- Correct minor installation or adjustment issues when authorized and practical.
- Escalate significant installation deficiencies to the Service Manager when corrective work exceeds the technician's authority or scope. A product must not automatically be considered defective until its installation condition has been properly evaluated. SERVICE CALL PROCEDURE For each service call, the technician should follow a consistent process: 1. Review – Understand the customer's complaint and service history. 2.
Inspect – Visually inspect the complete product and surrounding installation. 3. Measure – Check plumb, level, square, dimensions, reveals, and alignment when relevant. 4. Diagnose – Determine the probable root cause before replacing components. 5. Correct – Complete authorized adjustments or repairs. 6. Test – Operate and test the product after completing the repair. 7. Verify – Confirm that the original complaint has been resolved. 8. Document – Record work performed, measurements, parts used, photographs, and any recommended follow-up. 9. Communicate – Professionally explain completed work and next steps to the customer without making unauthorized commitments on behalf of the company. CUSTOMER SERVICE & PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT The Service Technician enters customers' homes and therefore holds a position of significant trust. The technician must:
