Intermediate Industrial Control Systems Programmer – PLC and HMI Beta-Tech Inc. (BTI) | Calgary, AB | Office-based | Permanent, full-time Modernize the control systems that keep operating pipeline facilities running, from PLC logic to operator screens, and help build the reusable tools that make every site faster than the last. About BTI BTI is an engineering and technology company supporting industrial facilities across Western Canada. We combine engineering, automation and controls, measurement, digital solutions and IT/OT expertise to solve practical challenges in operating facilities, helping our clients modernize and run critical infrastructure safely, reliably and efficiently. Our people work closely with clients from concept through commissioning, combining technical depth with hands-on execution, accountability and strong working relationships. We work by four principles: Integrity (we do what’s right, not what’s convenient), Efficiency (we never lose our sense of urgency), Quality (it’s our goal to set up our partners and clients for long-term success) and Innovation (we challenge the status quo to find better solutions). Why this role exists BTI is delivering a long-term program of projects to migrate legacy Modicon control systems to Schneider Electric M580 at operating pipeline facilities for a major client. We are looking for programmers to carry out this migration and development work, and to strengthen our programming capacity on the platforms we will use going forward. What you will accomplish In your first year, success in this role looks like this: 1. Deliver a PLC migration. Within your first year, support the conversion and testing of the PLC logic from Modicon to Schneider M580 for one project, through to passing the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT). 2. Commission and cut over safely. Support the commissioning and live cutover at one site, with the facility running and no unplanned shutdowns caused by the controls work. 3.
Migrate the operator screens to Ignition. Within 6 months, migrate the operator screens for one project to Ignition, following the client’s or BTI’s standards, so screens are consistent across sites and accepted by the client’s operators. 4. Make each site faster than the last. Within 12 months, create or improve reusable code blocks and templates for the control system, so each new site takes less programming time than the one before. 5. Become a go-to person for the team. Within 12 months, be one of the people the team turns to for Schneider and/or Ignition. How you will work
- Much of this work is detailed, methodical conversion work. It takes dedication and discipline, and also the drive to spot and act on opportunities to do it better.
- You write clear, documented and concise code, and reuse code wherever you can.
- You work independently and as part of the project team, reporting to the Automation Lead on the project.
- When the scope of work or expectations are incomplete, you recognize the missing details and push for clarification.
- You try to solve problems on your own, but you recognize when you are in over your head and speak up to get help in time. Where this role can take you Based on performance, this role offers a career path into Senior Programmer, Automation Team Lead or Project Lead roles, depending on your strengths and interests. What you bring You have already done this:
- Programmed industrial control systems hands-on: PLC logic, HMI/SCADA screens, or both
- Worked with at least one major PLC or HMI platform, such as Schneider Electric,
Ignition or Rockwell/Allen-Bradley *This role requires industrial control system experience. Programming experience limited to IT or data tools, such as Python or Power BI, is not a fit for this position.* Bonus if you have:
- Modicon to Schneider M580 migration experience, or other legacy control system migrations
- Experience with Ignition
- OT networking experience
- Commissioning or cutover experience at operating facilities, such as pipeline, oil and gas or other industrial sites
