Job Title: Detailer / Draftsperson, Commercial Millwork

Job Type
Full-time

Location:
GTA East, Orono Ontario Reports to: Design Manager, VP of Operations Company Overview: Ell-Rod Holdings Inc. is a leading provider of high-quality custom architectural millwork solutions. The Company has a 30+ year reputation for craftsmanship, innovation, and exceptional service. We specialize in delivering customized millwork projects across all sectors including commercial, institutional, retail, residential and hospitality clients. Ell-Rod has enjoyed decades of steady growth serving customers primarily in Ontario and the Caribbean. Position Overview We are seeking a Detailer / Draftsperson to produce accurate, production-ready shop drawings for our architectural millwork projects. Working closely with our project managers, shop and installation teams, the Detailer turns architectural drawings, specifications and site conditions into precise drawings that can be approved quickly, built efficiently and installed correctly. Shop drawings are the starting point for every project: until they are approved, nothing can be ordered, built or billed. This role keeps that work moving.

Key Responsibilities
Shop Drawings & Submittals
- Prepare detailed shop drawings for custom reception desks, feature walls, wall panelling, casework, cabinetry and other architectural millwork, including plans, elevations, sections and details.
- Translate architectural drawings, specifications and design intent into practical, buildable details.
- Detail cabinetry, doors, drawers, panels, mouldings, trims, countertops, hardware, veneers, finishes and specialty components.
- Propose commercial-grade materials, finishes and hardware where the specification is open, and flag any substitutions for approval.
- Prepare shop drawing submittals for general contractor, architect and designer review, and turn around revisions quickly to keep approvals on schedule.
- Track submittal status and approval dates with the Project Manager, and flag drawings that are holding up production. Design & Site Coordination
- Review architectural and design drawings for discrepancies, missing information and conflicts, and raise questions (RFIs) through the Project Manager early.

- Identify constructability issues and propose practical solutions.
- Coordinate millwork details with architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural and other site requirements.
- Make sure details meet Ontario Building Code, fire-rating, life safety and accessibility (AODA) requirements.
- Take part in design coordination meetings with architects, designers and general contractors.
- Take field measurements and verify site conditions where required.
- Incorporate client, design and change-order revisions accurately, and make sure the Project Manager knows when a revision changes scope or cost. Production & Installation Support
- Work closely with the shop foreman and production team so drawings are practical and suited to our equipment and construction methods.
- Produce cut lists, material takeoffs and bills of materials that support purchasing and production planning.
- Answer drawing-related questions from the shop and installers, and review in-progress work when needed to confirm it matches approved drawings.
- Provide installers with transparent installation drawings and help resolve differences between site conditions and approved drawings. Quality Control & Documentation
- Check every drawing before it is issued for approval or production: dimensions, elevations, materials, hardware, finishes and quantities.
- Keep drawings consistent with related drawings, specifications and approved changes.
- Maintain organized drawing files and revision histories, follow company drawing standards and naming conventions, and make sure only the current approved revision reaches the shop.
- Help reduce errors, rework, material waste and production delays through careful detailing. How Success Is Measured
- Shop drawings submitted on or before the dates in the project schedule
- Fast turnaround on revisions, with few resubmittals
- Few shop or site errors, rework or material waste traced back to drawings

- Few drawing questions from the shop and installers once work is released Above all, the Detailer is the person who catches problems on paper before they become expensive problems in the shop or on site. Qualifications & Experience
- 2 to 5 years of experience detailing architectural or commercial millwork, casework or cabinetry.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD.
- Strong knowledge of millwork construction, materials, hardware, joinery and finishing processes.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, specifications and elevations.
- Experience preparing shop drawing submittals for general contractors and architects is strongly preferred.
- Experience working directly with a millwork shop is strongly preferred.
- Experience on commercial interiors such as offices, retail, lobbies, hospitality or institutional projects.
- Working knowledge of building code, fire-rating and accessibility requirements as they apply to millwork.
- Familiarity with AWMAC / AWI architectural woodwork standards is an asset.
- Experience with 3D modelling or CAD/CAM software (Microvellum, Cabinet Vision, Autodesk 360, Inventor, SketchUp or similar) and CNC-ready drawings is an asset.
- Experience with ERP or production software (Innergy or similar) is an asset.
- Strong mathematical and dimensional skills.
- A diploma or degree in architectural technology, drafting, interior design or a related field, or equivalent referenceable experience. Certification in design or detailing is an asset. Personal Attributes The successful candidate will be:
- Extremely detail-oriented and precise
- Organized and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Proactive in spotting problems and asking questions early
- Practical and knowledgeable about how things are actually built
- Able to work independently while collaborating closely with project managers, the shop and installers
