About HBC Builders Inc.

HBC Builders Inc. is a General Contractor and Construction Manager serving Calgary, Okotoks and surrounding communities. We deliver commercial and multi-family renovations, building repairs and capital improvement projects, with a focus on safety, quality workmanship, value and clear communication.

We are seeking an experienced Working Construction Supervisor who can organize a job site, coordinate crews and subcontractors, and work alongside the team to bring projects to completion.

The Position

You will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of assigned construction sites, keeping work organized, secure, productive and on schedule.

This is a hands-on supervisory position. In addition to supervising work, you will perform general carpentry, repairs, site preparation, material handling, clean-up, deficiency work and other construction duties as required. The balance between supervision and physical work will vary with each project.

The successful candidate will take ownership of the job site, working closely with the Project Manager and Coordinator throughout project delivery. Responsibilities include providing practical construction input for estimates, planning site mobilization and upcoming work, confirming material quantities and availability, and completing final details to ensure each project is finished to a high standard and the site is clean and ready for turnover.

Key Responsibilities

Site leadership and coordination

- Supervise daily site activities, including HBC employees, labourers and subcontractors.
- Plan work in advance and maintain practical schedules that reflect project priorities, trade sequencing and completion dates. (Ability to schedule and follow a schedule in Gant format is a mandatory requirement)
- Coordinate multiple crews, trades and, when required, more than one project.
- Confirm site readiness, access, materials, equipment and labour before work begins.

- Identify potential delays, conflicts and missing information early, and work with the project team to resolve them.
- Communicate professionally with clients, property managers, consultants, building occupants and subcontractors.

Hands-on construction work

- Perform general carpentry, including framing, blocking, backing, trim, minor installations and repairs within your qualifications.
- Assist with demolition, site preparation, temporary protection and other general construction activities.
- Complete deficiency items and finishing details needed for project turnover.
- Receive, move and organize materials, tools and equipment.
- Participate in site clean-up, waste removal and maintaining safe, orderly work areas.
- Work alongside crews whenever additional support is needed to keep the project moving.

Quality, safety and project reporting

- Read and interpret drawings, specifications and scopes of work.
- Monitor workmanship and address deficiencies promptly.
- Enforce site safety requirements and ensure workers understand site hazards and expectations.
- Complete required safety documentation, site reports and progress updates.
- Maintain accurate records of progress, site conditions, deliveries, deficiencies and changes, supported by photographs.
- Verify material quantities and coordinate ordering and deliveries with the project team.
- Identify work outside the approved scope and report it before proceeding.
- Coordinate required inspections and support project closeout.

Qualifications and Experience

- Minimum five years of relevant construction experience, including experience as a supervisor, foreman or lead hand.
- Strong general carpentry skills and a sound understanding of construction methods and trade sequencing.

- Demonstrated ability to schedule work, coordinate subcontractors and manage competing priorities.
- Experience with commercial renovations, multi-family properties or occupied buildings is an asset.
- Ability to use a computer, smartphone and tablet confidently for email, schedules, photographs, reporting and electronic documents is mandatory.
- Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to perform the physical duties of the position safely, including carpentry, material handling and site clean-up.
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation to job sites throughout Calgary and surrounding communities.
- Relevant safety training and experience with JobTread construction management and Bluebeam software are assets.

Who Will Succeed in This Role

You are organized, dependable and comfortable making practical decisions. You plan ahead, follow through on commitments and keep the project team informed. You lead by example, hold workmanship to a high standard and understand that completing a project includes the small details, final deficiencies and clean-up. You present well to owners, stake holders and consultants and always act/present as a professional.
