Position Overview

Computool Gauge and Fixture is seeking a skilled Fixture Designer to join our team. The successful candidate will develop practical, accurate fixture designs that support precision manufacturing, inspection, and assembly requirements. This role involves translating customer requirements and part geometry into complete 3D models, detailed drawings, and manufacturing documentation while working closely with machining, toolmaking, and management personnel.

Key Responsibilities

- Design fixtures, jigs, workholding systems, and related tooling to meet project specifications.

- Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, detailed manufacturing drawings, and bills of materials.

- Review customer drawings, CAD data, tolerances, datum schemes, and functional requirements.

- Select suitable locating, clamping, and support methods to ensure repeatability and accessibility.

- Consider machining access, inspection access, operator use, maintenance, and safe handling during design.

- Specify materials, standard components, fits, clearances, and manufacturing tolerances.

- Review designs for manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, and cost effectiveness.

- Work with CNC programmers, machinists, and toolmakers to resolve design and build issues.

- Maintain drawing revisions, design records, and accurate project documentation.

- Support fixture assembly, tryout, dimensional verification, and required design improvements.

- Communicate project progress, technical concerns, and changes to management.

Qualifications

- Experience designing fixtures, jigs, workholding systems, or related tooling in a manufacturing environment.

- Proficiency with 3D mechanical CAD software and preparation of detailed 2D drawings.

- Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T;), and datum requirements.

- Practical understanding of machining processes, fabrication, tooling materials, and mechanical assembly.





- Knowledge of locating principles, clamping methods, tolerance stack-ups, and fixture repeatability.

- Ability to prepare clear drawings, bills of materials, and supporting technical documentation.

- Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.

- Ability to manage priorities and work independently while collaborating with the shop team.

- Relevant mechanical design, engineering technology, or tool and die training is an asset. Equivalent practical experience will be considered.

Additional Assets

- Experience using SolidWorks for fixture design, 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed drawings.

- Experience with checking fixtures, gauges, assembly fixtures, or machining fixtures.

- Experience in automotive, tool and die, or custom manufacturing environments.

- Hands-on experience with fixture assembly, tryout, inspection, or CNC machining.

Compensation & Schedule

Compensation will reflect the candidate's fixture design experience, CAD proficiency, and ability to manage projects

independently. Shift and working hours will be discussed during the interview process.
