About Mate Gauge
Mate Gauge is a leader in laser-based thickness monitoring systems used in manufacturing facilities around the world. We’re deploying cutting-edge, non-contact laser technology that helps manufacturers reduce waste, improve product quality, and lower environmental impact.
Our systems combine:
- Smart, robust sensors
- Seamless production line and data integration
- Production-tested hardware
- Powerful, intuitive software
Why Join Us?
You’ll be joining a growing company with real momentum, meaningful products, and a clear purpose. In this role you’ll gain hands-on engineering experience with software, hardware, automation, and customer interaction.
As a member of our Engineering Team you will work on a sophisticated platform used in our products. You will contribute to the design parts for machining, sheet metal forming and welding processes. You will also provide onsite customer support for product installations and troubleshooting.
Our customers work with engineers, not sales reps — from the first conversation through install, commissioning and support. We're hiring a mechanical engineer who wants to be that engineer and build the parts for it. On occasion, you'll join our customer on their plant floor and watch the product run, get their feedback and help build trust between them and Mate Gauge.
What You’ll Do
Months 1-3: Learn the system inside and out
- Hands-on training with an experienced colleague to learn MG1/MG3/MG5/MGX gauges
- Learn our existing designs, general assembly and parts drawings, and completed projects as well as our design guidelines and ERP and ECO system.
- Shadow a team member on a smaller project.
Months 3+: Design, build, ship, install
Machine design. Design robust C-frames, O-frames, and bespoke mounting structures in Solidworks, ensuring structural integrity, vibration mitigation, and precise sensor alignment for harsh continuous-manufacturing environments.
- Parts design: Design parts for machining, sheet metal forming, and welding processes.
- Modify and adapt existing designs to suit customer and internal requirements.
- Requirements & demos: Contribute to requirements definition using information gathered from customers, the field, and in house platform design
- Product documentation: manufacturing, installation and service procedures.
- Engage with colleagues: Communicate with other designers for feedback and to share your ideas.
- Submit renders and CAD screenshots as you develop them for ongoing feedback.
- Production: Contribute to the ECO process within our MRP to generate and maintain production documentation.
- Test your work: Electromechanical assembly and test as needed to test your designs, confirm fit and function.
- Installation & Commissioning: Complete pre-install fit-up visits and commission systems at customer sites - up to 15% travel.
Education and Expertise
Experience: Previous experience in mechanical engineering is required.
We welcome recent graduates with significant FSAE or academic project experience, as well as senior engineers with 5+ years of dedicated industrial machine design or custom automation experience.
Solidworks: Proven experience using Solidworks to design physical products for development and manufacturing. Experienced candidates should demonstrate mastery of complex assemblies, weldments, sheet metal, and rigorous manufacturing drawings.
Manufacturing Acumen: Practical understanding of custom manufacturing methods (machining, sheet metal forming, welding). You know how things are actually built on a shop floor and design accordingly.
End-to-End Ownership: For experienced hires, a track record of taking complex mechanical systems from a blank CAD screen through prototyping, testing, and successful onsite commissioning.
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or equivalent
- Communication: Exceptional interpersonal communication skills – listening, written and oral
- Curiosity: A sincere love and aptitude for tinkering with technology
- Problem solving: Ability to debug and solve complex technical problems
- Work environment: Comfortable working in an industrial setting. Able to lift heavy objects up to approximately 60 pounds/27 kilograms
- QA: Familiarity with Quality Engineering principles
- Business travel: About 15% of the time working at customer facilities and attending trade-shows. Some travel may be outside of North America. Must have a valid Canadian passport & be eligible to travel without restriction.
- Work on site: Willing and able to work on site full time.
- PEng: This is a potential opportunity for an engineer to earn their P.Eng. designation.
Pay: $75,000.00-$125,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
