Job Overview

The Derrickhand at Ensign Energy Services plays a key role in supporting safe and efficient drilling operations, with a primary focus on handling the drill string, monitoring drilling fluids, and assisting with the operation and maintenance of rig equipment. This hands-on position requires robust mechanical awareness, knowledge of drilling procedures, and a commitment to workplace safety. The Derrickhand works closely with the drilling crew to maintain proper drilling fluid circulation, support tubular handling operations, and ensure reliable performance throughout drilling activities.

Duties

- Assist with handling, assembling, and positioning drill pipe, drill collars, and other components of the drill string during tripping and drilling operations.
- Monitor drilling fluid levels, properties, and circulation, reporting any irregularities or equipment issues to the appropriate crew members.
- Assist with mixing, transferring, and maintaining drilling fluids in accordance with operational requirements and established procedures.
- Operate and monitor mud pumps, fluid tanks, shale shakers, and related drilling fluid systems as assigned.
- Perform routine inspections of rig equipment, drilling fluid systems, hoses, connections, and associated components.
- Support safe pipe handling, rig-up and rig-down activities, and the movement of drilling materials and equipment.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas, follow established safety procedures, and participate in pre-job safety meetings and hazard assessments.
- Communicate effectively with the driller and other crew members to coordinate drilling operations and promptly report unsafe conditions or equipment malfunctions.

Qualifications





Required:

- Practical mechanical knowledge and an understanding of safe drilling and equipment-handling practices.
- Ability to follow instructions, recognize operational hazards, and comply with established safety procedures.
- Basic understanding of drill string components, drilling fluid circulation, and rig equipment.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a drilling crew.
- Physical ability to perform demanding outdoor work in changing weather conditions and rotating shifts.

Preferred:

- Previous experience in oil and gas drilling, particularly with land-based drilling rigs.
- Experience handling drill pipe, drill collars, tubulars, and other drill string components.
- Familiarity with drilling fluid systems, mud pumps, shale shakers, fluid tanks, and solids-control equipment.
- Experience monitoring drilling fluid properties and assisting with fluid mixing and circulation.
- Previous experience as a Floorhand, Derrickhand, or other drilling rig crew member.
- Knowledge of industry safety standards, hazard identification, and safe lifting procedures.

Pay: From $44.38 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 45.0 per week
