Efficiency. Expertise. Integrity.
The Service Supervisor leads the daily maintenance and repair of Centerfire’s heavy equipment, trucks, and trailers supporting industrial and oil sands operations in northern Alberta. Based at the shop, this role coordinates shop and mobile service resources to keep equipment safe, reliable, and available for operations.
The role owns the service process from the initial request through diagnosis, planning, repair, quality verification, and work order closure. Success requires visible leadership, sound technical judgment, accurate maintenance records, and consistent follow-through on commitments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Shop Leadership and Work Planning
- Lead shop technicians, apprentices, and service support personnel; establish daily priorities, assign work, and provide coaching and accountability.
- Maintain a daily shop schedule and a forward maintenance plan that account for equipment needs, technician capacity, parts, and bay availability.
- Coordinate with operations and field supervisors on equipment release, breakdown response, replacement requirements, and realistic return-to-service dates. Communicate delays early.
Preventive Maintenance and Service Requests
- Own the service-request workflow. Ensure each request is recorded, assessed, prioritized, assigned an owner and due date, and tracked to verified completion.
- Plan preventive maintenance to OEM requirements and operating conditions. Coordinate field services and shop shutdowns with operations to limit disruption.
- Reconcile equipment hours, inspection reports, service history, and telematics data. Resolve missing or conflicting records and maintain an accurate view of services due and overdue.
- Prioritize safety-critical defects and overdue maintenance. Ensure unsafe equipment is removed from service and released only after appropriate repairs and verification.
Repair Quality and Safety
- Support diagnosis and repair planning for heavy equipment, trucks, and trailers. Arrange OEM or specialist support when needed.
- Verify repair quality, required inspections, and completion records before equipment returns to service. Investigate repeat failures and implement corrective action.
- Enforce safe work procedures, hazard assessments, isolation practices, housekeeping, and environmental controls throughout shop and field maintenance.
Parts and Cost Control
- Coordinate parts procurement, critical spares, tooling, and outside repairs. Identify shortages early and keep work moving.
- Review labour, parts,
and outside-service costs by unit and work order. Identify unusual spending, warranty opportunities, and repair-versus-replace decisions for management review.
- Work within delegated spending authority and escalate major repairs, resource constraints, and budget risks with clear recommendations.
Systems and Reporting
- Maintain complete work orders with accurate unit numbers, hours, labour, parts, findings, repairs, and completion dates.
- Enforce consistent use of fleet-maintenance software, inspection tools, Geotab, and related service processes. Resolve data gaps with the responsible teams.
- Provide a daily view of equipment down, critical defects, repair progress, parts delays, and expected availability. Report weekly on maintenance compliance, backlog, downtime, costs, and repeat failures.
- Identify recurring process problems and implement practical improvements with named owners, due dates, and follow-up.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Heavy equipment service or fleet-maintenance experience, including leadership of technicians in a busy shop or combined shop and field operation.
- Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician certification, preferably Red Seal, or an equivalent combination of technical experience and demonstrated maintenance leadership is an asset.
- Strong working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrains, preventive maintenance, and heavy-equipment troubleshooting.
- Experience planning maintenance, managing work orders and repair backlogs, coordinating parts, and controlling repair costs.
- Comfort using fleet-maintenance systems, telematics, and Microsoft Office to verify information, monitor performance, and support decisions.
- Clear communication, sound prioritization, and the ability to hold people accountable while developing a capable team.
- Oil sands or industrial-site experience and familiarity with Geotab are assets.
- A valid driver’s licence and ability to meet applicable site-access requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Primarily shop-based, with regular coordination of field maintenance and site visits as required.
The role supports operations that may require after-hours breakdown response and seasonal changes in workload.
Shift schedule, on-call coverage, reporting relationship, and compensation will be established during recruitment.
