Overview

We are seeking a supervisor to support, manage, and work alongside two neurodivergent work placement participants in our new community empowerment project. The project will include aspects of advocacy through community radio, digital media, grant-writing, and community events. Activities will include organizing and hosting a radio show on CIVL Radio, recording and editing video for social media, assisting with winter and spring events, and delivering a grant-writing workshop or resource for local youth. The role combines supervision and mentoring with hands-on participation. You will learn and take part in the work alongside the participants, rather than simply assigning tasks and checking in.

This position may be a good fit for someone early in their career in social work or a related field, or for someone with experience or a strong interest in digital media, radio, youth leadership, and community-based nonprofit work. Above all, we are looking for someone who respects neurodivergent young people as emerging professionals and can create the conditions for them to succeed.

About the Position

- Term: Early November 2026 to mid-April 2027, with the possibility of extension depending on funding
- Hours: 30 hours per week
- Compensation: $25 to $27 per hour, with one unpaid week off at Christmas.
- Location: Abbotsford and surrounding Fraser Valley communities, with a mix of remote and in-person work
- Schedule: Flexible, arranged in collaboration with the participants, while ensuring project responsibilities and deadlines are met
- Some evening and weekend work will be required for events, community gatherings, and trainings

This position is part of a new project funded by the federal and provincial governments, and through Work BC. The Community Empowerment Supervisor will be responsible for directly managing, supervising, and assisting two work placement participants - neurodivergent youth looking to get into the fields of non-profit management, social media, and / or radio broadcasting. This position will be working closely with the project manager, who will provide training, go over general goals, tasks, and deadlines. This is not a care-giver position, rather a mentor to assist, manage, and work alongside participants.

Primary Responsibilities of the Community Empowerment Manager:

- Work with the Mayday Club team to set goals, tasks, deadlines, and workplans to fulfill the goals of the project
- Build consistent, respectful working relationships with the two participants and provide supervision, mentoring, encouragement, and problem-solving support
- Work alongside the participants on project activities, including co-hosting radio segments, producing video for social media, completing online courses, developing community resources, and running community events
- Learn the relevant tasks and tools needed for the project so you can demonstrate processes, provide instruction, and help participants build confidence and independence
- Help participants access and complete online trainings
- Support the planning and delivery of a live radio show twice a week, including scheduling, preparing topics and content, and communicating with guests and community partners in advance

- Coordinate video production and social media activities, including recording and editing footage, sharing Mayday Club program stories, and developing an accessibility-focused campaign about the Fraser Valley
- Be the primary point of contact for community partners, such as CIVL Radio team, day programs, interviewees, etc. - but assist, facilitate and include the two participants in all communications
- Help develop and deliver a grant-writing workshop for local youth and/or create an online grant-writing toolkit for neurodivergent youth, depending on community interest
- Coordinate project logistics, including schedules, materials, budgets, meetings, and community events such as mini-concerts at day programs
- Help identify barriers to success that each of the participants face, and work with them and the Mayday Club team to overcome them
- Foster a positive, flexible, and engaging work environment that supports learning, wellbeing, creativity, and a sense of shared purpose

About the Participants' Work

The two work-placement participants, known as Community Empowerment Coordinators, will be developing skills through a mix of online learning and practical work. Their activities are expected to include:

- Completing online courses in radio operations, professional communication, neurodiversity in the workplace, social media management, and grant writing
- Hosting a radio show on CIVL Radio at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford twice a week and helping plan topics, guests, and discussions
- Recording, editing, and publishing video content featuring Mayday Club programs and community stories
- Developing and delivering a grant-writing workshop for local youth or creating an online grant-writing toolkit for neurodivergent youth

Qualifications and Experience

- Criminal records check and vulnerable sector search
- Experience working with or alongside neurodivergent / disabled people (whether professionally or personally)
- Experience supporting youth, youth-led initiatives, community projects, or peer leadership
- Skills in digital media production, including video creation and editing, with skills in photography, social media, graphic design, or digital art
- Ability to translate complex ideas and program learning into clear, accessible content.
- Robust facilitation, relationship-building, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, balancing direct youth work

Assets:

- A degree or diploma in the Human/Social Service field
- Valid Class 5 license, and access to a reliable vehicle

Skills & Personal Attributes

- Respectful, patient, encouraging, and committed to neurodiversity-affirming practice
- Able to recognize participants’ strengths and support them as emerging professionals,

rather than expecting them to conform to a single way of working
- Flexible and creative, with a practical approach to problem-solving and removing barriers
- Organized and dependable, while comfortable adapting plans as the project develops
- Interested in building a positive team environment where learning, enjoyment, and meaningful contribution are all valued

Work Environment

The role is a combination of remote and in-person work. The preferred arrangement is at least an approximately 50/50 mix of in-person and remote work, with remote work completed by video call alongside the participants. Mayday Club is renting office space near the Abbotsford Airport for project work and meetings. You will also travel to locations such as the CIVL Radio studio at the University of the Fraser Valley, day programs when hosting community events, and locations where campaign interviews take place. The schedule and work locations can be planned flexibly with the participants and Program Director.

About Mayday Club

Mayday Club is a grassroots, neurodivergent youth-directed project based out of Abbotsford. Our organization began 10 years ago, when a small group of youth in the Fraser Valley wanted to enrich the lives and career prospects of neurodivergent and disabled kids. Mayday Club is now a fast-growing and thriving community project that stays true to its roots, and remains directed by a steering committee of neurodivergent and disabled Fraser Valley youth, and is directed by a board made up of self-advocates and family members. We run a 25-voice youth choir made up of neurodivergent and disabled people under 30 years of age, a dance team for neurodivergent kids, we host an annual silent disco and an annual talent show, and we help empower local youth to run their own mini programs, such as art classes and boardgame meetups. Everything we do serves to provide neurodivergent and disabled youth with meaningful opportunities for growth, and to educate the public on the power of inclusion and how it benefits all of society.

Mayday Club empowers neurodivergent and disabled youth through initiatives that nurture authentic self-expression, artistic growth, leadership skills, and connection. Our programs combat isolation, build confidence, and promote inclusion in our community. We inspire meaningful change by challenging and reshaping the existing narrative around human diversity.
