Position Overview
Shafts and Tunnels Consulting Services (STCS) is looking for an experienced and motivated Intermediate or Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team.
This position will support technically challenging underground mining and heavy civil projects, with a particular focus on shaft and tunnel design, rock mechanics, geotechnical investigations, ground support, and underground construction.
We are open to candidates at either the Intermediate level, with approximately 4–8 years of relevant experience, or the Senior level, with approximately 8–12 years of relevant experience. The responsibilities, level of project ownership, and compensation will reflect the successful candidate’s experience and technical capabilities.
The successful candidate will have a strong foundation in rock mechanics and underground geotechnical engineering, combined with practical field experience and an understanding of industry-standard engineering and geological modelling software.
In addition to competitive compensation, this opportunity includes employee ownership opportunities and eligibility for 1.5x overtime.
Key Responsibilities:
Geotechnical Engineering and Design
· Perform geotechnical analyses and develop designs for underground mine infrastructure, including shafts, tunnels, declines, portals, and underground excavations.
· Design and assess ground support systems, including rock bolts, cable bolts, shotcrete, steel sets, and other support systems.
· Conduct rock mass characterization and classification using RMR, Q-system, GSI, and other established methods.
· Evaluate excavation stability, structural controls, in situ stress conditions, and ground support requirements.
· Develop geotechnical design criteria, engineering calculations, technical specifications, and design reports.
· Support feasibility studies, engineering trade-off assessments, and detailed design packages.
Geological Modelling and Engineering Software
· Develop and interpret geological and geotechnical models using Leapfrog.
· Work with mine layouts and underground development designs using Deswik and CAD software.
· Prepare and review engineering drawings, excavation geometries, and ground support layouts.
· Apply numerical modelling and analytical methods to evaluate underground excavation stability.
· Integrate geological, structural,
and geotechnical data into practical engineering designs.
Site Investigations and Field Engineering
· Plan and execute geotechnical site investigations, including drilling programs, core logging, in situ testing, and laboratory testing.
· Conduct underground face mapping, structural geological mapping, and ground condition assessments.
· Perform geotechnical inspections of underground excavations, shafts, tunnels, and ground support installations.
· Provide field engineering support during underground construction, including assessment of changing ground conditions and recommendations for excavation and support.
· Review and interpret investigation data to develop geotechnical parameters and engineering recommendations.
· Work collaboratively with mine operators, contractors, and construction teams to address technical challenges in the field.
Project Delivery
· Prepare technical memoranda, engineering reports, design documentation, and client presentations.
· Coordinate with geological, mining, civil, and structural engineering disciplines.
· Participate in technical reviews, risk assessments, and design workshops.
· Manage assigned engineering tasks, budgets, and schedules.
· Communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to clients and project stakeholders.
· Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the technical development of the team.
Requirements:
· A Bachelor’s degree in Geological, Geotechnical, Mining, Civil Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
· Candidates with approximately 4–8 years of experience will generally be considered at the Intermediate level, while candidates with approximately 8–12 years of experience will generally be considered at the Senior level.
· Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration with a Canadian engineering regulator.
· Strong understanding of rock mechanics, rock mass characterization, underground excavation stability, and ground support.
· Experience with underground geotechnical mapping, including face mapping, structural data collection, and rock mass classification.
· Experience planning, supervising, conducting, or interpreting geotechnical site investigations.
· Working knowledge of Deswik, Leapfrog, and CAD software.
· Experience with ground support design and underground excavation engineering.
· Strong technical writing, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
· The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
· The ability to balance technical engineering requirements with practical construction and project considerations.
· A willingness and ability to travel to mine sites and remote project locations, including working in underground environments.
Preferred Experience:
· Direct experience with shaft sinking, shaft lining design, tunnel design, and underground mine development.
· Experience with numerical modelling software such as RS2, RS3, FLAC3D, or similar.
· Familiarity with drilling and blasting, excavation sequencing, and underground construction methods.
· Experience with soil and rock engineering associated with deep excavations, shaft collars, portals, and underground infrastructure.
· Familiarity with geotechnical instrumentation, monitoring, and observational design methods.
· Experience working directly with underground mining contractors or providing construction-phase engineering support.
· Experience developing geotechnical design reports, technical specifications, engineering calculations, and construction drawings.
· For Senior-level candidates, experience leading technical work, managing engineering deliverables, working directly with clients, and mentoring less-experienced engineers.
