Procurement Advisor (Capital Projects)
Location: Fort McMurray or Calgary, Alberta
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 5/2 rotation, 8-hour days
Contract Duration: 12 months, with strong potential for extension
Compensation: Competitive hourly rates, based on experience and employment arrangement
About the Opportunity
TPD is looking to hire two experienced Procurement Advisors for our client, one of Canada's leading energy companies, supporting its Mine & Tailings capital projects portfolio in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
These are exciting, long-term contract opportunities for procurement professionals who enjoy combining strategic sourcing, commercial negotiations, and hands-on procurement execution to deliver measurable value on complex industrial projects.
The positions will support a diverse portfolio of capital projects, typically ranging from $10 million to $100 million, across major oil sands operations in northern Alberta. Projects may include pipelines, piping systems, e-Houses, pumps, barges, and other critical mine and tailings infrastructure.
The roles offer an approximately 50/50 split between strategic sourcing and procurement execution, providing the opportunity to manage procurement activities from initial project requirements and competitive sourcing through purchase order administration and project execution.
Candidates may be based in Fort McMurray (preferred) or Calgary, with occasional travel to Fort McMurray required for Calgary-based colleagues. These are primarily office/site-based positions with regular weekday working hours.
Responsibilities
- Manage end-to-end procurement of complex materials, equipment, and services for Mine & Tailings capital projects, ensuring alignment with project schedules, budgets, and execution requirements.
- Develop and execute strategic sourcing initiatives, including preparing and issuing RFx packages, evaluating supplier proposals, and recommending commercially competitive contract awards.
- Lead supplier negotiations to achieve cost savings, improve commercial terms, mitigate supply risks, and maximize value throughout the procurement lifecycle.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, project controls, construction, operations,
and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and develop effective procurement strategies.
- Manage the complete purchase order lifecycle, including requisition reviews, PO issuance, amendments, expediting, supplier follow-up, issue resolution, and closeout.
- Support procurement of long-lead equipment, complex fabrication packages, and specialized services, proactively addressing delivery challenges and changing project requirements.
- Monitor supplier performance, delivery commitments, commercial compliance, and procurement risks to support successful project execution.
- Anticipate procurement requirements over a 12-18-month planning horizon, working with project teams to identify sourcing opportunities and mitigate potential supply constraints.
- Maintain accurate procurement documentation, track key performance indicators, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the Supply Chain organization.
Qualifications & Experience
- 5-7 years of relevant experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, supply chain management, or a combination of commercial and technical roles, preferably within industrial or capital project environments.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related discipline preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex procurement activities, including RFx processes, supplier evaluations, commercial negotiations, contract awards, and purchase order administration.
- Strong commercial and financial acumen, with a proactive approach to identifying cost savings, improving supplier value, and managing procurement risks.
- Experience sourcing materials, equipment, fabrication packages, and/or specialized services for capital projects.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills, with the ability to build productive relationships with multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced project environment.
- Strong listening, analytical,
and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand business requirements, manage competing priorities, and develop practical solutions.
- Familiarity with SAP, SAP Ariba, Fieldglass, MyTrack, and spend analytics tools is an asset. Training on specific systems can be provided for candidates with strong procurement and commercial experience.
- Ability to independently manage multiple sourcing and procurement priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy, responsiveness, and accountability.
- Experience in oil sands, mining, heavy industrial operations, or large-scale capital projects is considered a strong asset.
What Will Make You Successful
We are particularly interested in procurement professionals who bring more than transactional purchasing experience. The ideal candidate understands how to translate complex project requirements into effective sourcing strategies, negotiate favourable commercial outcomes, and build trusted relationships with the various stakeholders.
A collaborative, customer-focused approach, strong negotiation skills, and a genuine drive to identify cost-saving opportunities will be key to success in this role.
Previous experience working within major Canadian oil sands operations or supporting Mine & Tailings capital projects will be particularly valuable.
