Job Synopsis

The Retail Assistant/Cashier is an important part of the Retail Team at the Portage MCC thrift store, assisting with daily processing and pricing, product flow, merchandising, and helping with customer service. This position requires efficiency and reliability, and the ability to work with staff and volunteers of all ages.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

- Awareness of and commitment to the mission of MCC and Portage MCC.
- A people-oriented team member with a heart for volunteers, staff, and community members from all walks of life.
- Self-motivated and willing to take initiative, while responsive to the direction of the Retail Manager.
- Physical stamina (including the ability to work most of the day on your feet) and the ability to lift/move heavy/awkward items.

Preferred Qualifications

- Retail experience, particularly in a thrift or second-hand environment.
- Awareness of second-hand market trends, retail merchandising, and customer preferences.
- Comfortable with technology, including online research and POS systems.
- Skilled in using social media for promotion and engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities & Time Allocation

1. Processing & Pricing (Store Back) (50%)

- Help provide efficient processing of donated items.
- As assigned, price donated merchandise.

3. Merchandising (Store Front) (20%)

- Help with oversight and revamping of displays.
- Help monitor and manage the quality, volume,



and rotation of inventory on the sales floor.

3. Cashiering (Store Front) (30%)

- Provide friendly customer service by accurately processing payments for goods.
- Help customers locate items and assist in finding answers to donor and customer queries.

Physical and Mental Demands

- Remain on their feet for over 50% of the time while performing duties in store front & back.
- Regularly interact with the general public, including customers, donors, and a diverse team of volunteers and staff.
- Occasionally move and lift products weighing up to 50 pounds across the store and processing areas.
- Maintain composure and professionalism in busy retail environments and during peak customer periods.
- Navigate and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, requiring robust organizational and problem-solving skills.
