Operations Manager

Heartbeat Group of Companies
Calgary, AB · In-person, 5 days/week · Travel across Western Canada

This isn’t a role someone grows into. It’s a role someone grows a company with.

Heartbeat Group of Companies is the parent of some of Western Canada’s most trusted training brands — First Aid Training Calgary, First Aid Training Edmonton, Certified Safety Training, Shock Shop, and more. We’re a strong business, with two established markets, a 50-person team, and a very specific plan to become a $100M company across Canada over the next nine years.

We’re hiring the person who’s going to make the next 12 months of that plan actually happen — and grow into running the operation as it scales.

What You’ll Build in 12 Months

Months 0–3: Clean up and stabilize.
Calgary and Edmonton are the foundation. Before we scale, they need to run on documented systems, not on heroics. You’ll own the operational audit, lead the Guest Success and booking admin function, and serve as the key operator for the implementation of our recent CRM/LMS — the system that will become the nervous system of the entire business.

Months 3–6: Open one new training centre.
With the foundation stabilized, you’ll open our third location. Site, team, equipment, launch — and the playbook that comes out of doing it once, well.

Months 6–12: Open three more.
Four current training centres across Western Canada in your first year. Not because we’re reckless — because we built the playbook on launch #1 and we’re ready to run it.

By the end of Year 1, Heartbeat is a 5-location operation running on a system you built, with a team you developed. This is where you’ve earned the seat — and where the role grows with you into senior operational leadership.

What You’ll Actually Own

- Day-to-day operations across every Heartbeat training centre
- The master training calendar, instructor scheduling, and course delivery quality
- Guest Success and booking admin — from first inquiry to post-course follow-up
- Our new CRM/LMS implementation (key operator — you own it)
- Facility Leads, Senior Instructors, and the on-the-ground teams at each centre
- The operating cadence: weekly ops meeting, monthly review, quarterly planning
- The new centre launch playbook — write it, prove it,

replicate it
- The leadership bench we need to carry 5-10x growth

You’ll report directly to the CEO, partnered closely with our Chief of Staff who owns the internal engine (Finance, HR, Systems). Together with a small senior team, you’ll run the business.

Who We’re Hiring

We’re not looking for a specific resume. We’re looking for a specific altitude.

The people who tend to thrive in this kind of role have come from:

- Recreation management — if you’ve run programming at a rec centre, managed certified staff, juggled facility schedules through peak seasons, and delivered guest experiences that people remember, this role is built for you
- Multi-location studio or clinic management — fitness studios, physio/chiro clinics, dental practices, climbing gyms, martial arts academies
- Hospitality operations — hotels, high-volume restaurants, event production
- Multi-unit retail or franchise operations — someone who’s opened new locations and knows what breaks
- Trades or field service dispatch — HVAC, electrical, industrial services at scale
- Regulated training or education — driving schools, flight schools, continuing education, corporate learning

If you’ve run a complex calendar of certified people delivering real work to real customers, day after day, and done it well — we want to talk.

You’ll Love This Role If...

- You’re a systems builder. You see broken processes and fix them permanently, not around them.
- You hold people accountable with warmth. You hire well, you develop people, and you’re not afraid to make the hard call.
- You’re commercially curious. Maybe you don’t read a P&L; fluently today — but you’re ready to learn, because this role will teach you.
- You communicate cleanly. Concise, evidence-based, no drama.
- You don’t need a playbook handed to you. You write the playbook.
- You’re hungry.

You want to prove you can run something bigger — and you want to earn it, not inherit it.

Bonus, not required: Experience in safety training, first aid/CPR, healthcare education, or another regulated training environment. Familiarity with Alberta OHS. Experience opening new locations or markets.

The Working Model, Honestly

- In-person, 5 days/week. Our whole 50-person team is on-site, and this role sets the tone for the next phase of our team culture. In-office is non-negotiable, especially while you’re earning trust and building the bench.
- Regular travel. Edmonton weekly to start. New centres as they open across Western Canada.
- Real working rhythm. The training business runs seven days a week. The Operations Manager needs to be visible to staff, instructors, and customers across the actual operating hours of the business — not just a Monday-to-Friday office window. Evening and weekend presence is part of the role, balanced by flexibility in how you shape your week.
- We’re onboarding the EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) framework for leadership and culture development. You’ll be a founding voice in how that lands.

Compensation

- Competitive base salary with a clear step-up at the 6-month mark tied to specific, measurable milestones
- Group benefits (health, dental, life, disability) through Manulife after 90-day probationary period
- Unified “time off” (no splitting between vacation, sick, personal — we trust adults to manage their time)
- Mileage reimbursement for travel to regional centres
- A real growth path — prove yourself in this seat, grow into senior operational leadership as we scale
- Specifics discussed with shortlisted candidates

How to Apply

Send your resume and a short note — three to five paragraphs is plenty — answering one question:

Describe a time you took an operation through a real change. What was it like when you arrived, what did you do, and what was it like when you left (or where is it now)?

We’re less interested in polished cover letters than in evidence you’ve done the work.

Heartbeat Group of Companies is an equal opportunity employer. If you need accommodations at any point in the application process, let us know.

Pay: $70,000.00-$110,000.00 per year

Work Location: In person
