With an established disability management program and strong leadership support, we offer an opportunity to apply your expertise where your contribution will be valued.
About You / What We Are Looking For
You know that effective disability management takes technical expertise, sound judgment and strong relationships. You can work through a complex claim, identify practical return-to-work options and bring people together around a clear plan. You approach sensitive conversations with empathy and confidence, balancing employee recovery with operational needs and the City’s responsibilities as an employer.
We are seeking an experienced Disability Management and Claims Advisor for a three-year temporary full-time opportunity focused on occupational WorkSafeBC claims. You will manage workplace injury claims from initial reporting through resolution, coordinate modified duties and gradual return-to-work plans, and represent the City’s interests in complex claims matters.
Working within our Health and Safety team and alongside Human Resources colleagues, you will build relationships with employees, supervisors, managers, union representatives, healthcare providers and WorkSafeBC. You will also contribute to early intervention and prevention initiatives that strengthen our approach to workplace injury management.
Reporting to Manager of Health and Safety, this role offers the opportunity to take ownership of a specialized portfolio while drawing on the support of an experienced, collaborative team.
Main Responsibilities
- Manage occupational WorkSafeBC claims, including reporting, reviewing claim information, preparing employer submissions and monitoring decisions and claim progress.
- Develop, implement and monitor individualized modified duties and gradual return-to-work plans in collaboration with employees, leaders,
healthcare providers and WorkSafeBC.
- Maintain regular follow-up to identify barriers, adjust plans and support safe, timely and sustainable returns to work.
- Review claims decisions and prepare evidence-based requests for relief of costs, review submissions and appeals, as appropriate.
- Provide practical advice to managers, supervisors and employees on occupational disability management, accommodation and return-to-work processes.
- Maintain accurate, confidential case records and monitor claims activity to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and administration of the City’s occupational disability management program.
- Support related early intervention, prevention and employee education initiatives in collaboration with the Health and Safety team.
Minimum Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree in a related field.
- A minimum of three years of direct experience managing WorkSafeBC claims, including occupational disability management and return-to-work cases.
- Strong knowledge of WorkSafeBC claims processes, the Rehabilitation Services & Claims Manual, and relevant legislation and policies.
- Experience developing and coordinating modified work arrangements and gradual return-to-work plans.
- Experience preparing employer submissions and managing complex claims, including matters involving the WorkSafeBC Review Division and Workers’ Compensation Appeal Tribunal.
- Strong written communication, analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and sensitive information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of progressively responsible WorkSafeBC claims management experience.
- Experience working in a unionized environment, preferably within municipal government or another public sector organization.
- A certificate, professional designation or specialized education in disability management.
- Experience contributing to early intervention, injury prevention or disability management program improvements.
The Ideal Candidate
You take an active approach to case management and follow through on commitments. You can assess complex information, prepare clear and persuasive submissions, and translate technical requirements into practical advice.
You build trust while addressing difficult issues directly and respectfully. Comfortable working with employees and leaders across a range of operational settings, you find workable solutions, maintain appropriate boundaries and recognize when to draw on colleagues’ expertise.
You bring both compassion for the individual and accountability for moving each file forward.
Why Work With Us
This is an opportunity to join an established program where safe return to work is a shared priority and leadership supports proactive disability management. You will work with colleagues who understand the connection between injury prevention, recovery and the realities of delivering municipal services.
Your expertise will help employees stay connected to their workplace, support managers in finding meaningful modified work and strengthen the services our community depends on. Over the three-year term, you will also have opportunities to contribute ideas and improvements that extend beyond individual claims.
