We encourage individuals with these identities to apply.

Position Description

The Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University invites applications from exceptional emerging scholars for a faculty position in the Department of Medical Imaging in the area of Radiopharmaceutical Sciences and Molecular Imaging . The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

This recruitment will identify a candidate for appointment as McMaster University's Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader and nomination for a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) , subject to eligibility, institutional approval, and the requirements of the respective programs. Candidates must independently satisfy the eligibility requirements of both programs. The recruitment process has been designed to meet the requirements of both the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Program and the Canada Research Chairs Program.

Applicants must hold a PhD and/or MD (or equivalent doctoral degree) in a relevant discipline. This is a Faculty requirement and is not a requirement of either the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Program or the Canada Research Chairs Program.

The successful candidate will establish an internationally recognized research program in Radiopharmaceutical Sciences and Molecular Imaging and join a rapidly expanding research ecosystem that includes newly recruited leaders in radiopharmaceutical development, molecular imaging, and nuclear medicine clinical trials at McMaster University.

Researchers benefit from access to unique infrastructure that includes the McMaster Nuclear Reactor, cyclotron-based isotope and radiotracer production capabilities, GMP-compatible radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and radiochemistry facilities, advanced imaging platforms, and integrated clinical research programs. The successful candidate will collaborate with investigators across Medical Imaging, Oncology, Medicine, Engineering, Science, Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, and the newly established McMaster Institute for Radiopharmaceutical Imaging and Therapy (MIRIT).

As one of Canada's emerging centres for radiopharmaceutical innovation, McMaster is making significant institutional investments to integrate isotope production, radiochemistry, imaging science, clinical translation, and commercialization within a single academic health sciences environment. This position offers the opportunity to help shape the next phase of growth in radiopharmaceutical imaging and therapy while advancing novel radiopharmaceuticals, molecular imaging technologies, and multicentre clinical research programs in nuclear medicine and theranostics.

Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders is a $120 million investment by the Government of Canada to help institutions recruit more internationally based early career researchers in areas of strategic priority . Emerging Leaders are expected to have an independent program of research, with potential for impact through collaborations with, but not limited to, Canada Impact+ Research Chairs . Tier 2 Chair awards provide $100,000 per year to the institution for five years and are renewable once. First-term Tier 2 Chairholders also receive a $20,000 annual research stipend. The Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader award provides $100,000 per year for six years, with the possibility of a six-year extension, subject to the requirements of the Canada Impact+ Emerging Leaders Program.

Canada Impact+ Emerging Leader candidates must:

- be internationally based (both working and residing outside of Canada) at the time that the Impact+ chair accepts the award;

- be excellent emerging world-class researchers who have demonstrated research creativity;

- have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years;

- have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers;

- be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality; and

- be willing and able to start the position, on a full-time basis, by June 1, 2027.

Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging researchers who have demonstrated research creativity, the potential to achieve international recognition, the ability to attract and mentor outstanding trainees, and the capacity to develop an original, high-quality research program.

Tier 2 nominees must be emerging researchers who, at the time of nomination, are within 10 years of their first independent academic research-related appointment, subject to the Canada Research Chairs Program’s Tier 2 eligibility provisions. Candidates whose research careers have been interrupted by eligible circumstances, such as parental leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, or family care, may have their eligibility assessed through the Tier 2 Justification process .

Please contact Michelle Czerwinski, Associate Director, Research Administration and Infrastructure, Health Research Services, FHS at [email protected] for more information about the justification process.

Full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria, can be found at the Canada Research Chairs website at Nominate a Chair (chairs-chaires.gc.ca) . All nominations for CRCs are subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a clear and ambitious vision for both continuing and further developing McMaster’s Faculty of Health Sciences strengths in biomedical research, as well as advancing McMaster University’s Strategic Research Plan .

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain an internationally competitive research program, contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervise and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and contribute to the Faculty's commitment to research excellence, equity, diversity, inclusion, and collegiality.

Questions about this position can be addressed to Dr. Jonathan Bramson, Vice Dean Research at [email protected] .
