About the Role
Schramm’s Woodcraft is seeking an experienced Millwork Estimator to prepare accurate, competitive estimates for commercial cabinetry and architectural millwork projects.
We’re looking for someone who understands how millwork is built and installed, reviews drawings and specifications carefully, and takes ownership of producing complete, well-supported bids. You will work closely with ownership, operations, suppliers, and our production team to price work realistically and ensure awarded projects are clearly defined before moving into production.
Responsibilities
- Review architectural drawings, specifications, addenda, and tender requirements to establish the complete millwork scope.
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and estimates covering materials, hardware, finishing, shop labour, installation, freight, and subcontracted work.
- Identify scope gaps, conflicting details, unusual requirements, and potential cost or schedule risks; prepare clarification requests as needed.
- Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations for pricing, completeness, availability, and lead times.
- Assess fabrication methods and installation requirements with the production team to ensure labour allowances reflect the work involved.
- Prepare clear proposals outlining scope, inclusions, exclusions, assumptions, and pricing alternatives.
- Track tender deadlines, revisions, and addenda to ensure bids are complete and submitted on time.
- Review pricing and scope changes during tender negotiations and prepare estimates for change requests.
- Provide organized estimate handoffs for awarded projects, including budgets, quantities, supplier quotations, and outstanding clarifications.
- Compare estimated costs with actual project results and help improve estimating accuracy, pricing information, and processes.
- Support estimating staff as required.
Qualifications
- Previous experience estimating commercial architectural millwork and cabinetry.
- Strong understanding of cabinet construction, sheet goods, veneers, laminates, solid wood, hardware, finishing, and installation methods.
- Ability to interpret architectural drawings, millwork details, specifications, and tender documents.
- Familiarity with AWMAC standards and their implications for materials, fabrication, and project requirements.
- Proficiency with Excel and digital takeoff or estimating software, with the ability to learn new systems.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tenders and competing deadlines.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain pricing assumptions and resolve scope questions.
- Sound judgment in balancing competitive pricing with realistic costs and project profitability.
- Cabinetmaking, installation, or millwork production experience is an asset.
