Senior HSE Advisor – Construction

Drive Safety. Grow Accountability. Excel in Execution.

At Steelcon, safety happens in the field. We are looking for a Senior HSE Advisor – Construction who brings strong HSE knowledge, practical construction experience, and a hands-on approach to supporting our structural steel erection operations.

This is not a desk-based advisory role. You will spend your time in the field working alongside our Superintendents, Forepersons, and crews: walking the work, identifying hazards, solving problems, completing inspections and investigations, delivering training, and making sure the HSE work gets done.

Position Overview

Reporting to the HSE Director, the Senior HSE Advisor – Construction provides hands-on HSE support across Steelcon’s structural steel erection projects.

The role works closely with field leadership and crews to plan work safely, identify and control hazards, maintain compliance, and strengthen HSE performance in the field. The successful candidate will bring the experience and confidence to challenge unsafe conditions and coach our leaders, but also the willingness to roll up their sleeves and complete the day-to-day HSE work required to support our projects.

HSE Leadership & Field Support

- Maintain a robust field presence, working directly with Superintendents, Forepersons, and crews to support safe execution of the work.
- Conduct regular field inspections and observations, identify hazards and unsafe conditions, and work with field leadership to resolve them.
- Provide practical HSE guidance and coaching while reinforcing accountability for safety at every level.
- Act as a hands-on HSE resource for our construction teams,

stepping in to complete the work required to keep projects moving safely.

Planning & Risk Management

- Participate in planning for structural steel erection activities to ensure hazards and required controls are identified before work begins.
- Complete and review hazard assessments, safe work plans, procedures, and other required HSE documentation.
- Provide hands-on support for high-risk activities including steel erection, working at heights, cranes and hoisting, rigging, mobile equipment, and material handling.
- Respond to changing field conditions and work with crews to establish practical controls that allow work to proceed safely.

Incident & Corrective Action Management

- Respond to and lead investigations of incidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, and significant hazards.
- Complete investigations, determine root causes, and establish practical corrective and preventive actions.
- Work directly with field leadership to implement corrective actions and follow them through to completion.
- Identify recurring issues and lessons learned and apply improvements across construction operations.

Training & Employee Engagement

- Deliver orientations, toolbox talks, safety meetings, refresher training, and other HSE training as required.

- Coach Superintendents and Forepersons on hazard recognition, safe work planning, incident response, and their HSE responsibilities.
- Engage directly with crews to reinforce safe work practices, address concerns, and strengthen hazard awareness.
- Monitor required training and qualifications and ensure HSE records and documentation remain current.

HSE Performance & Continuous Improvement

- Monitor field HSE performance and identify projects, activities, or crews requiring additional support.
- Maintain required HSE records, reports, inspection documentation, investigations, and corrective action tracking.
- Identify recurring risks and gaps and take an active role in developing and implementing practical improvements.
- Support broader Steelcon HSE initiatives and help ensure consistent safety expectations across construction operations.

Qualifications

- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related discipline.
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation or other related designation (CRST, CRSP, etc.) is required.
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive HSE experience in structural steel erection, construction, or a comparable high-risk trade environment.
- Strong practical knowledge of construction safety, including steel erection, working at heights, cranes and hoisting, rigging, fall protection, mobile equipment, and material handling.
- Demonstrated hands-on approach with the ability to work effectively with field leadership and crews, challenge unsafe conditions, solve problems, and personally follow HSE work through to completion.
