Opportunity: Engineering Manager – Integrated Automation & Control Solutions
Location: West GTA (Greater Toronto Area)
Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Our client is a premier industrial automation solutions provider and systems integrator. They are seeking a strategic, hands-on Engineering Manager to direct the regional and global strategy for their electrical, automation, and controls engineering department.
In this role, you will oversee the comprehensive design, standardization, and lifecycle management of low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage (MV) Motor Control Centers (MCCs), advanced Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) configurations, and complex process automation networks. Serving a diverse multi-site portfolio across Critical Infrastructure, Process Industries, and Industrial Manufacturing, you will ensure operational continuity, safety standardization, and cutting-edge technology integration.
Career Path & Growth
This role features a potential executive trajectory. You will actively develop, mentor, and scale a world-class design engineering team with the direct long-term goal of stepping into the Director of Engineering role for the company's entire Integrated Automation & Control Solution Platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Technical Leadership: Manage, mentor, and build a high-performing team of electrical, controls, and automation engineers specialized in heavy industrial process applications.
- LV/MV System Architecture: Oversee the design and configuration of custom LV/MV smart MCCs, high-horsepower VFD systems (air and water-cooled), harmonic mitigation filters, and soft starters.
- Process Automation & Networking: Direct the engineering of PLC, HMI, and SCADA architectures, ensuring seamless industrial network integration (EtherNet/IP,
PROFINET, Modbus) across complex process loops.
- Global Fleet Standardization: Develop, implement, and enforce company-wide engineering standards, corporate blueprints, and unified PLC code libraries to ensure multi-divisional consistency.
- Project Governance (CapEx/OpEx): Partner with Project Management, Procurement, and Operations to provide technical oversight on large-scale greenfield and brownfield expansions, ensuring optimal Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
- Reliability Engineering & Support: Establish robust frameworks for advanced remote troubleshooting, diagnostics, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to minimize operational downtime across customer facilities.
- Regulatory Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety standards and regional electrical codes (UL/CSA for North America, CE/IEC for Europe, IEEE, DNV/ABS/Lloyds for Marine, and Uptime Institute for Data Centers).
- Technology Roadmap & Innovation: Drive the adoption of Industry 4.0 initiatives, including predictive maintenance analytics for VFDs, smart-MCC data modeling, and secure cloud-SCADA integration.
Industry Focus & Key Applications
- Heavy Industrial (Mining, Pulp & Paper, Forestry): Designing for harsh environment mitigation, dust/corrosion resistance, high vibration, and heavy-start load profiles.
- Critical Infrastructure (Data Centers, Municipal Water):
Implementing redundant power configurations, critical cooling controls, and zero-downtime transition strategies.
- Marine & Material Handling: Developing marine-certified electrical enclosures, high-duty-cycle conveyor controls, and regenerative braking/VFD systems.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or Power Systems.
- Licensure: Professional Engineer (P.Eng. / PE) designation is required.
- Experience: 10+ years of progressive engineering experience in process industries, with at least 3–5 years in a formal engineering management or team leadership capacity.
- Technical Hardware Expertise: Deep knowledge of LV/MV switchgear, smart MCCs (e.g., Rockwell IntelliCENTER, Siemens SIMOCODE), and major VFD/PLC platforms (Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, ABB, Schneider Electric).
- Software & Systems: Strong proficiency in HMI/SCADA engineering paired with Network Operating Center (NOC) environments.
- Domain Knowledge: Proven experience with power quality analysis, arc-flash mitigation, harmonic analysis, and heavy-industry safety protocols.
- Leadership Style: Exceptional project management and interpersonal skills, with a passionate track record for developing, improving, and growing financial and engineering standards across organizations.
