Calgary

- Location: Calgary, Alberta (office-based, with occasional travel to project sites in Canada)
- Reports to: Engineering Manager
- Employment type: Full-time, permanent
- Starting: November, 2026

About MVA Group

MVA Group is a Calgary-based EPC and EPCM partner that has provided the power sector with engineering and project management for nearly three decades. Our expertise spans transmission and distribution line design (more than 7,000 km of overhead and underground line projects), substation design, behind-the-fence power generation, regulatory approvals and project management.

We are currently delivering a ~100 MW reciprocating gas-engine power station and 144 kV substation in northern Alberta under an EPC contract, on a shared, multi-contractor site. This project is part of a growing pipeline of 50–500 MW power generation projects.

About the role

MVA Group is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the electrical design of our power generation and substation projects. The role combines technical leadership, review and quality control of work prepared by in-house and subconsultant teams, project management, and client coordination. You will be the electrical discipline lead on our current power generation EPC project and on future similar power generation and substation projects.

The Senior Electrical Engineer will also support MVA’s powerline and utility work, including overhead transmission and distribution line design, FortisAlberta UEDS designs and shallow-services coordination for land development and oversight of SaskPower distribution design.

Responsibilities

Power generation and substation design

- Lead or oversee the electrical design of power generation facilities and high-voltage substations from design basis through construction support, working with in-house staff and engineering subconsultants.
- Lead or oversee the electrical design of the generation plant, including medium- and low-voltage power distribution, generator connections, station service and auxiliary power, motor control centres, UPS and DC systems, and emergency and standby power.
- Lead or oversee cable and raceway design, including cable sizing, cable schedules, routing, cable trays and duct banks, as well as plant lighting and lightning protection.
- Lead or oversee the design of plant control and automation systems, including generator and engine control interfaces, plant controllers, PLC and SCADA systems, instrumentation, and fire and gas system interfaces.

- Lead or oversee the preparation of single-line diagrams, protection and control philosophies, grounding design and power system studies (short circuit, load flow, load rejection, harmonics and arc flash). Review and QA/QC these deliverables for accuracy and compliance.
- Lead or oversee the preparation of technical specifications and material requisitions for electrical equipment, including generation-voltage switchgear, generator step-up transformers and high-voltage breakers and switches, and support bid evaluations and vendor document reviews.
- Lead or oversee the electrical technical scope of grid interconnection, coordinating with the transmission facility owner and the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO).
- Review calculations, drawings, specifications and construction packages for accuracy, safety, constructability and code compliance. Authenticate engineering documents where MVA is the engineer of record.
- Represent the electrical discipline in owner and owner’s engineer meetings and correspondence, and resolve review comments within agreed review cycles.
- Provide electrical engineering input to procurement, construction, field reviews, commissioning, testing and handover.

Powerline and utility design

- Lead overhead transmission and distribution line design from initial planning through construction support.
- Develop and review line routes, structure and foundation selections, conductor and hardware specifications, clearances, grounding, material requirements, and construction drawings.
- Lead or oversee FortisAlberta UEDS designs and guide submissions through utility review and approval. Coordinate shallow services for land development projects with utility providers.
- Provide technical and project management oversight of SaskPower distribution design projects, from quotation through review, comment resolution and final release.
- Apply IES guidelines to streetlight and pedestrian lighting design.

Project management and leadership

- Develop and manage discipline work plans and deliverable schedules, monitor progress and budgets, and flag changes in scope or schedule early.

- Communicate with developers, utilities, municipalities, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to keep design requirements and schedules aligned.
- Support the Project Manager with progress reporting, interface management and client communication.
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to the engineering team and take responsibility for the quality of the discipline’s deliverables.

Qualifications

Required

- Degree in electrical engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA. Registered with APEGS (Saskatchewan), or eligible for registration.
- 10 or more years of electrical engineering experience, including at least 5 years leading the electrical design of power generation facilities of 20 MW or larger and their high-voltage substations.
- Experience in overhead transmission or distribution line design and utility review processes.
- Demonstrated project management and leadership experience, including work plans, schedules, budgets and client relationships.
- Experience delivering projects under Canadian and Albertan codes and requirements, including the Canadian Electrical Code, the Alberta Electrical Utility Code, equipment certification and standards (CSA, CRN, cUL)
- Experience with AESO technical requirements: ISO Rules Section 502.5 (generating unit technical requirements) and 502.8 (SCADA), plus revenue metering, and support of the AESO connection process stages and the required power system models/studies.
- Strong technical judgement and the ability to communicate clearly with clients, utilities, contractors and project teams.

Assets

- Experience with reciprocating gas-engine or gas-turbine power plants, generator protection and plant control systems.
- Familiarity with the FortisAlberta UEDS design and review process and SaskPower distribution design standards.
- Experience with relevant software packages, including but not limited to power system analysis (ETAP, SKM), PLS-CADD, PSCAD, AutoCAD, Bluebeam and Asana.
- Ambitious individual capable of working on challenging projects in a fast-paced setting.
