About MVA Group
MVA Group is a Calgary-based EPC and EPCM partner that has provided the power sector with engineering and project management for nearly three decades. Our expertise spans transmission and distribution line design (more than 7,000 km of overhead and underground line projects), substation design, behind-the-fence power generation, regulatory approvals and project management.
We are currently delivering a ~100 MW reciprocating gas-engine power station and 144 kV substation in northern Alberta under an EPC contract, on a shared, multi-contractor site. This project is part of a growing pipeline of 50–500 MW power generation projects.
About the role
MVA Group is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical and process design of our power generation projects. The role combines technical leadership, review and quality control of work prepared by in-house teams, subconsultants and equipment vendors, project management, and client coordination. You will be the mechanical discipline lead on our current power generation EPC project and on future similar power generation projects.
Responsibilities
Mechanical and process design
- Lead or oversee the mechanical and process design of power generation facilities from design basis through construction support, working with in-house staff, engineering subconsultants and equipment vendors.
- Lead the preparation of process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs;), equipment lists, line lists, datasheets and mechanical calculations. Review and QA/QC these deliverables for accuracy and compliance.
- Lead or oversee the design of balance-of-plant systems, including fuel gas supply and conditioning, lube oil, engine cooling and heat rejection, charge air, exhaust and emissions control, compressed air, heat recovery and noise attenuation.
- Lead or oversee equipment selection and the preparation of technical specifications and material requisitions for mechanical equipment,
and support bid evaluations and vendor document reviews.
- Manage the technical interface with major equipment suppliers, including scope splits, technical queries, variation requests and reviews of vendor drawings and documents.
- Lead or oversee mechanical participation in Plant Hazard Analysis (PHA) and constructability reviews.
- Oversee building services design (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and fire and gas detection) delivered by specialist subconsultants and sub-discipline leads.
- Prepare the mechanical inputs to environmental and noise permitting: EPEA air approval, MSAPR and AUC Rule 012.
- Lead or oversee pressure equipment and piping code compliance, design registration and approvals, working with the certification and permitting team.
- Review calculations, drawings, specifications and construction packages for accuracy, safety, constructability and code compliance. Authenticate engineering documents where MVA is the engineer of record.
- Manage interfaces with civil/structural and electrical disciplines.
- Represent the mechanical discipline in owner and owner’s engineer meetings and correspondence, and resolve review comments within agreed review cycles.
- Provide electrical engineering input to procurement, construction, field reviews, commissioning, testing and handover.
Project management and leadership
- Develop and manage discipline work plans and deliverable schedules, monitor progress and budgets, and flag changes in scope or schedule early.
- Support the Project Manager with progress reporting, interface management and client communication.
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to engineers, designers and technologists, and take responsibility for the quality of the discipline’s deliverables.
Qualifications
Required
- Degree in mechanical engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA.
- 10 or more years of mechanical engineering experience, including at least 5 years leading the mechanical or process design of power generation facilities of 20 MW or larger.
- Hands-on experience with PFDs, P&IDs;, equipment selection and specifications for gas-fired power generation (reciprocating engines, gas turbines or combined cycle).
- Experience overseeing specialised sub-discipline design work delivered by others.
- Demonstrated project management and leadership experience, including work plans, schedules, budgets and client relationships.
- Experience delivering projects in compliance with Canadian codes and Alberta regulatory requirements, including ABSA pressure equipment design registration and compliance, CSA B51 (Boiler, Pressure Vessel, and Pressure Piping Code), CSA B149.1 (Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code), and ASME B31.1 (Power Piping) and B31.3 (Process Piping).
- Solid technical judgement and the ability to communicate clearly with clients, vendors, contractors and project teams.
Assets
- Experience with reciprocating gas-engine power plants and supplier-provided balance-of-plant packages.
- Experience with process engineering.
- Experience with emissions, noise and heat recovery requirements for gas-fired generation.
