We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an elderly Italian couple in their late 70s and early 80s living in Niagara Falls. The father is experiencing cognitive decline with episodes of confusion, disorientation, and fear. He's awaiting assessment at a geriatric clinic and occasionally believes people are trying to harm him during these episodes. The mother is also experiencing cognitive overwhelm and struggles to appropriately support her husband during his difficult moments, often becoming agitated herself which escalates situations. Both parents are very resistant to accepting care and prefer to maintain their independence. They recently relocated from Toronto back to Niagara Falls where they have family connections and feel more at home. This is their first time receiving professional care support.
Responsibilities:
- Provide companionship and establish a trusting relationship with both clients
- Monitor their wellbeing and safety, reporting any concerns to family
- Help organize and declutter their apartment, particularly the second bedroom
- Assist with light housekeeping and tidying
- Provide medication reminders and ensure prescriptions are filled
- Offer mobility support and transfer assistance as needed (father uses cane and walker)
- Guide the mother on better approaches to support her husband during confusion episodes
- Use gentle redirection and memory prompts for cognitive support
- Maintain clear communication with family about visits and any incidents
What We're Looking For:
- PSW certification or equivalent qualified training required
- Experience with dementia care and behavioral episodes essential
- Patience working with care-resistant clients
- Cultural sensitivity (Italian background or familiarity preferred)
- English fluency required, Italian language skills a strong asset
- Calm, patient demeanor with ability to de-escalate situations
- Strong initiative and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication with family members
- Ability to work independently and respect client independence
- Experience supporting multiple clients simultaneously
Schedule:
Starting with two visits per week, 3 hours each (Tuesday and Thursday, 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM), with potential to expand to three visits at 2 hours each as the relationship develops. Daytime hours only as clients prefer not going out after dark. Flexibility and consistency are important.
