Lodge Maintenance Technician – Duck Mountain Lodge
Part-time to full-time (20 to 40 hours a week) · Permanent · Year-round · $22.00 to $26.00/hour, depending on experience · Paid call-outs (3-hour minimum)
About Us
Duck Mountain Lodge sat empty for 9 years. We brought it back to life in 2024, and we're now open year-round with a restaurant, lounge, cafe and 15 guest rooms. Our guests are work crews, snowmobilers, cottagers and families who've been coming to the park for generations. Keeping an older building running well is a big job, and we need someone who takes pride in doing it right.
We're on Madge Lake in Duck Mountain Provincial Park, surrounded by trails, the beach and the golf course in summer and ski and snowmobile trails in winter.
The Role
You'll be the go-to person for everything that needs fixing, servicing or sprucing up around the lodge. Guests, staff and the owner will count on you to spot problems early and fix them before they turn into bigger ones. If you're the kind of person who sees a loose railing or a dripping tap and just takes care of it, this job is for you.
What You'll Do
- Repair and maintain the building, inside and out: doors, locks, windows, drywall, flooring, trim, railings and decks
- Service furnaces and heating systems: change filters, check thermostats and keep heat running in all 15 rooms and the restaurant
- Maintain and troubleshoot kitchen and laundry appliances: fryers, ovens, coolers, freezers, dishwasher, washers and dryers
- Fix basic plumbing: leaky taps, running toilets, clogged drains, water heaters
- Fix basic electrical: light fixtures, switches, outlets, breakers
- Paint,
patch and touch up guest rooms, hallways, the dining room and the exterior
- Turn rooms around quickly when something breaks, so they're ready for the next guest
- Do preventive maintenance on a schedule, and keep a simple log of what was done and when
- Operate a skid steer for snow removal, keeping the parking lot, driveway and walkways clear and safe all winter
- Handle seasonal work: winterizing, ice control, yard, deck and grounds upkeep
- Book and meet outside trades (gas fitter, electrician, refrigeration) when a job needs a licence, and make sure the work gets done properly
- Keep the shop, tools and supplies organized, and let the owner know what needs to be ordered
- Make sure the building stays secure: smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, emergency lights and exits
- Respond to urgent repairs (no heat, no water, a broken cooler) when they come up
What You Need
- 3+ years of experience in building maintenance, property maintenance, a trade, or as a handyperson
- Hands-on skills in carpentry, painting, plumbing, basic electrical and appliance repair
- Experience with furnaces and heating systems
- Experience operating a skid steer, including snow removal (required)
- Good problem-solving.
You can figure out what's wrong and fix it
- Reliable and self-motivated. You show up, see what needs doing and do it without being chased
- Neat, careful work, especially in guest areas
- Your own basic hand tools
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders and work outdoors in all seasons
- Available on call for urgent repairs, including evenings and weekends
- Must have reliable transportation or your own vehicle (we're in a provincial park)
- Live within a reasonable drive of the lodge so you can respond to call-outs. Accommodations are not provided.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada. We are unable to provide LMIA or any immigration or work permit support.
Nice to Have
- Gas fitter, HVAC, refrigeration, electrical or plumbing ticket
- Experience at a hotel, lodge, resort or restaurant
