Job Summary HR Service Jobs is seeking a detail-oriented, analytical, and responsible Mortgage Underwriter – Lending Application Assessment to evaluate mortgage applications, assess borrower eligibility, and determine whether loan requests meet established lending standards. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting responsible lending decisions by reviewing financial documentation, verifying applicant information, evaluating creditworthiness, and assessing the risks associated with residential mortgage applications.

As a Mortgage Underwriter, you will examine borrowers financial profiles, including income, employment history, credit reports, existing debts, assets, liabilities, and property valuations. You will ensure that mortgage applications are reviewed accurately, consistently, and in accordance with applicable lending policies, regulatory requirements, and risk management guidelines.

This position requires strong financial analysis skills, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple applications while maintaining high standards of accuracy and service quality. You will collaborate with mortgage processors, loan officers, brokers, valuation professionals, and other internal teams to resolve documentation gaps, clarify application details, and facilitate timely lending decisions.

The ideal candidate will be committed to skilled integrity, responsible risk assessment, data confidentiality, and delivering a reliable mortgage underwriting experience. This opportunity may suit candidates with previous mortgage, banking, credit analysis, or financial services experience who want to contribute to an organized and professional lending environment.

Mortgage Application Assessment: Review residential mortgage applications to determine whether applicants meet the lenders eligibility criteria, lending policies, and established underwriting standards.

Financial Documentation Review: Examine payslips, bank statements, tax documents, employment records, proof of assets, liability statements, and other supporting documents to verify the information provided by applicants.

Creditworthiness Evaluation: Analyze credit reports, repayment histories, outstanding balances, credit utilization, existing financial commitments, and other relevant indicators to evaluate borrowers ability and willingness to repay mortgage loans.

Assess income stability, employment continuity, self-employment earnings, additional income sources, and supporting evidence to determine whether the borrowers income is sufficient to support the proposed mortgage repayment.

Debt-to-Income Analysis: Calculate and review debt-to-income ratios and other applicable affordability measures to determine whether the requested mortgage is appropriate under the lenders guidelines.

Loan-to-Value Assessment: Review property valuations, purchase prices, proposed loan amounts, and applicable loan-to-value limits to assess collateral-related risk.

Risk Identification: Identify discrepancies, incomplete records, unusual financial patterns, potential fraud indicators, and other issues that may affect the quality or eligibility of a mortgage application.

Approve, conditionally approve, refer, suspend, or recommend declining applications within the authority assigned to the role and in accordance with applicable policies.

Policy and Regulatory Compliance: Follow applicable lending regulations, responsible lending requirements, internal procedures, documentation standards, and relevant anti-fraud and identity-verification controls.

Work with loan officers, mortgage processors, brokers, applicants,

and internal departments to clarify discrepancies, request missing information, and communicate underwriting requirements professionally.

Maintain complete, accurate, and well-organized records of assessments, supporting evidence, risk findings, decisions, and reasons for any conditions or exceptions.

Turnaround Time Management: Manage assigned application volumes, prioritize cases according to urgency and complexity, and work toward established service-level agreements without compromising decision quality.

Escalate applications involving complex financial circumstances, policy exceptions, elevated risk, or decisions outside delegated authority to the appropriate senior underwriter or lending manager.

Quality Assurance: Review calculations, documentation, and decision records to minimize errors, improve consistency, and support internal audit and quality control requirements.

Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve underwriting workflows, documentation practices, risk assessment processes, and overall operational efficiency.

A bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, Banking, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.

Candidates with relevant professional certifications, banking qualifications, or equivalent practical experience may also be considered.

A solid understanding of financial statements, lending principles, credit assessment, and mortgage documentation is highly desirable.
