Koyn is a payments technology business supporting payment orchestration, merchant settlement and alternative payment methods, with FX and stablecoin services facilitated through licensed partners.
We are seeking an experienced MLRO to lead Koyn Inc.’s anti-money laundering, counter-terrorist financing and sanctions compliance programme. This is a hands-on role requiring sound judgement, practical transaction-monitoring experience and the ability to challenge commercial decisions where necessary.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain and implement AML/CTF and sanctions policies, procedures and controls appropriate to Koyn’s services, customers and jurisdictions.
- Act as the principal escalation point for suspicious activity, financial crime concerns and high-risk customer decisions.
- Oversee customer and merchant onboarding, KYC/KYB, beneficial ownership verification, source-of-funds checks and enhanced due diligence.
- Review transaction-monitoring alerts, investigate unusual activity and document decisions clearly.
- Assess reporting obligations and ensure required reports are accurate, complete and submitted to FINTRAC within applicable deadlines.
- Oversee sanctions, PEP and adverse-media screening, including potential matches and escalation decisions.
- Conduct and maintain business-wide financial crime risk assessments and customer risk-rating methodologies.
- Assess risks associated with cross-border payments, payment intermediaries, iGaming, forex and virtual-asset-related activity.
- Review payment and referral partners, define compliance responsibilities and monitor outsourced compliance arrangements.
- Prepare and maintain compliance manuals, onboarding procedures, investigation records and regulatory correspondence.
- Complete banking and payment-provider due diligence requests, including Wolfsberg questionnaires, using evidence of controls actually implemented.
- Deliver staff training and maintain training records.
- Report material risks, incidents, control weaknesses and remediation progress directly to senior management and the Board.
- Coordinate independent compliance reviews and ensure findings are addressed.
- Maintain appropriate records and support regulatory enquiries, audits and examinations.
Essential requirements
- At least three years’ relevant AML/compliance experience within payments, an MSB, fintech, banking or a comparable regulated business.
- Demonstrable knowledge of the Canadian AML/CTF framework and FINTRAC requirements.
- Previous experience as an MLRO, designated AML compliance officer or senior financial crime skilled with reporting responsibilities.
- Practical experience in transaction monitoring, investigations, suspicious transaction reporting, KYC/KYB and enhanced due diligence.
- Strong understanding of sanctions, beneficial ownership, complex corporate structures and cross-border payment risks.
- Ability to draft clear policies, procedures, risk assessments and investigation reports.
- Confidence to make independent decisions, challenge senior stakeholders and escalate concerns.
- Excellent written and spoken English, attention to detail and discretion.
Desirable
- CAMS, ICA or an equivalent financial crime qualification.
- Experience with virtual assets, stablecoins, blockchain analytics and partner-led payment models.
- Familiarity with UK/EU AML frameworks and Canadian payment-service-provider requirements.
- Experience supporting bank onboarding, regulatory reviews and independent compliance testing.
Authority and accountability
The MLRO will have direct access to the Board and the information needed to perform the role, with authority to escalate concerns and require onboarding or transactions to be paused pending compliance review.
