Do you want to know what things really cost, and help shape what happens next?
Cost Accountant – Manufacturing
Eco Guardian Inc. | Aurora, Ontario | On-site | Full-time, Permanent
$85,000 – $100,000 annual base salary
Eco Guardian makes certified compostable foodservice packaging: the cups, containers, and takeout packaging that keep single-use plastic out of landfills. Our production line and warehouse are in the same Aurora building as our finance team. You won’t be costing products from a spreadsheet three cities away. You can walk onto the floor and see them being made.
We’re adding a Cost Accountant. This is a brand-new role, and you’ll help define it.
Why This Role Matters
This role exists so Eco Guardian knows the true cost of every product we make, import, and store. Your numbers will shape the prices we quote, the margins we earn, and the decisions we make on the production floor. You’ll also lead the way in improving our cost reporting, taking us from manual work toward timely, automated information that leadership can act on.
What You’ll Do
- Own product costing. Build and maintain standard costs and bills of materials for manufactured and imported products, and review them quarterly.
- Raise the standard of reporting. Build clear, timely cost reports and dashboards for the Controller, the Director of Manufacturing, and leadership.
- Automate the flow of data. Work with our Director of Manufacturing and Director, Systems and Integration. Together you’ll connect production and inventory data, such as line uptime and downtime, output, scrap, and inventory movements, directly into finance.
- Explain the “why.” Analyse monthly variances and product margins, and compare quoted margins with actual margins.
- Track labour and efficiency. Report on labour costs, OEE, cost per unit, and downtime, and put a dollar value on improvement opportunities.
- Keep inventory honest. Maintain inventory valuation, lead cycle counts and physical counts, and identify slow-moving stock.
- Master landed cost. Model the full cost of products imported from Asia, including freight, duties, tariffs, brokerage, and exchange rates.
- Support quoting. Supply cost inputs to our Business Analyst and review the cost build-up on complex quotes.
- Close the month. Prepare costing entries and margin reports, and support budgeting, forecasting, and the year-end audit.
What You Bring
- At least 5 years of solid cost accounting experience in a manufacturing setting
- A degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (a CMA, or progress toward one)
- Hands-on experience with standard costing, bills of materials, variance analysis, and inventory valuation
- A track record of improving cost reporting and automating data between ERP, production, and inventory systems
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with Power BI or similar reporting tools is a strong asset
- Experience with SAP Business One or a comparable ERP system
- Experience with landed cost, customs brokers, or Incoterms is an asset, as is experience in packaging or consumer packaged goods
- The ability to explain cost findings in plain language, and comfort working on the production floor
