About Us
AT Safety Training and ACTI deliver safety training and certification to workers across Alberta. We run classroom, hands-on and online programs out of physical training facilities, supported by a growing remote team. Our IT environment is broader than most companies our size: office and classroom devices across multiple sites, a mix of on-site and cloud servers, a VoIP phone system, multiple WordPress websites and customer-facing platforms, and a range of specialized applications supporting our Wellness department.
The Role
You are the on-the-ground technologist for two training companies. You keep the facilities running: networks, Wi-Fi, workstations, classroom AV, printers, phones, and the Microsoft 365 environment that ties it all together. You are the first call when something breaks and the person who notices before anyone else does. You are also our on-the-ground coordinator: the single point of contact who directs our external managed IT service provider and our network of outside application developers, hands them clear tickets, tracks their work, and holds them to it.
What You Will Do
Keep the facilities running
- Own day-to-day IT operations at our training sites: workstations, laptops, peripherals, printers, classroom projectors and displays, and instructor equipment.
- Set up, image and maintain classroom and training-lab computers so every course starts with working gear.
- Keep an accurate inventory of hardware, licences and warranties, and plan replacements before things fail.
Handle the network
- Manage local networks at all sites, with support from our Managed IT Service Provider: routers, firewalls, switches, wireless access points, VLANs, guest and staff Wi-Fi, and internet connectivity.
- Diagnose and resolve connectivity, performance and outage issues, and escalate to ISPs or vendors with clear technical detail.
- Maintain site-to-site and remote access (VPN) so remote staff and the remote IT team can work securely.
- Document network topology, IP addressing, credentials and configurations so nothing lives only in one person's head.
Administer the Microsoft environment
- Administer Microsoft 365: user accounts, licences, Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and Intune device management.
- Manage Entra ID (Azure AD) identities, groups, multi-factor authentication and conditional access policies.
- Onboard and offboard staff and instructors: accounts, devices, permissions and clean removal of access on departure.
- Maintain on-site servers and cloud-hosted infrastructure: patching, monitoring, storage, backup and recovery, and coordination with Brandon on infrastructure changes. Maintain Windows endpoints, patching, antivirus and endpoint protection across all sites.
Support the people
- Provide friendly, plain-language help desk support to office staff, instructors and remote employees, in person, by phone and through a ticketing system.
- Support the customer-facing side of the business alongside Ryan: WordPress websites, learning management system, registration and payment platforms, and website-connected tools. Support the specialized applications used by our Wellness department, including vendor coordination, updates, user access and integration with the rest of the environment.
- Train staff on tools and valuable security habits, and create short how-to guides that reduce repeat tickets.
Coordinate external partners
- Act as the on-site coordinator and single point of contact for our external managed service provider: log and prioritize tickets, provide hands-on support they cannot deliver remotely, verify completed work and escalate when response or quality falls short.
- Coordinate our network of external developers alongside Ryan: gather requirements from staff, write clear briefs, test deliverables in our environment and confirm changes are deployed and working.
- Maintain a single view of all open vendor and developer work, and report status, cost and risk to leadership on a regular basis.
- Manage vendor access to our systems: grant it when needed, scope it tightly and remove it when work is done.
- Review MSP and vendor invoices against the work actually delivered, and flag scope creep or unused services.
Build the team and the practice
- Work with Ryan and Brandon to divide responsibilities, share on-call coverage and set standards across both companies.
- Own the relationship with our managed service provider: define what stays with them and what comes in-house, and lead the transfer of documentation, credentials and vendor relationships as that scope changes.
- Standardize IT across AT Safety and ACTI, and help prepare the environment to absorb future integrations.
- Recommend and implement practical improvements to security, reliability and cost, and manage relationships with IT vendors and ISPs.
What You Bring
Required
- Experience: Five or more years in an IT support, systems administrator or IT generalist role, ideally as the sole or primary IT resource for a small or mid-sized organization with multiple locations.
- Microsoft stack: Hands-on administration of Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune and Windows 10/11 in a business environment. Comfortable with Windows Server and Active Directory where present.
- Networking: Working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, firewalls, VPNs and Wi-Fi. Able to configure and troubleshoot business-grade network equipment (for example Ubiquiti, Fortinet, Meraki, SonicWall or similar).
- Hardware: Confident building, imaging,
repairing and deploying desktops, laptops, printers and AV equipment. Experienced supporting on-site servers alongside cloud services and administering third-party business applications in a multi-vendor environment.
- Security fundamentals: Understands MFA, least privilege, patching, backups, phishing risk and basic incident response.
- Documentation: Writes clear documentation and keeps it current without being asked.
- Vendor coordination: Proven experience managing a managed service provider, contractors or outside developers: scoping work, tracking tickets, verifying results and holding partners accountable.
- Communication: Explains technical issues in plain language to non-technical staff, stays calm with a frustrated user, and gives outside vendors precise, well-scoped instructions.
- Mobility: Valid Class 5 driver's licence and a reliable vehicle. Regular travel between the Sherwood Park and Edmonton-area sites, occasionally on short notice.
- Physical: Able to lift and install equipment, run cable, and work in ceilings, server closets and training bays.
Nice to have
- Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+ or Security+, Microsoft MS-102 or AZ-104, or a vendor networking certification (CCNA, Fortinet NSE, Ubiquiti).
- Experience with learning management systems, online registration or e-commerce platforms, or WordPress.
- Exposure to VoIP phone systems, security camera and access control systems.
- Experience migrating away from a managed service provider or consolidating IT across merged companies.
- Scripting for automation (PowerShell in particular).
- Experience in a training, education or construction-adjacent environment.
Who Does Well Here
- You like variety. A day here can move from a dead projector to a firewall rule to a recent hire's laptop to a vendor call.
- You are a finisher. Tickets get closed, root causes get fixed, and follow-ups actually happen.
- You are comfortable being the only IT person in the building, and equally comfortable working as one of three.
- You take ownership without needing to be told, and you tell people early when something is at risk.
- You are organized enough to keep six vendors and two remote colleagues pointed at the right problems, and direct enough to say when one of them has dropped the ball.
- You would rather build something that lasts than patch the same problem twice.
Working Conditions
- Primarily on site during business hours, with occasional evening or weekend work for maintenance windows, course setups or urgent issues.
- Shared after-hours on-call rotation with the remote IT team.
- Regular travel between company sites in the Edmonton region. Mileage is reimbursed.
