Navacon Construction
Saint George
Company Overview
Join our team at Navacon Construction, a leading heavy civil construction company in Ontario. We specialize in delivering high-quality water and sewer reconstruction, road building, and site development projects that improve communities and enhance connectivity. With a commitment to safety, quality, and innovation, we take pride in our work and are dedicated to fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Junior Full-Stack Developer to build Navacon's own estimating, job cost, and crew and equipment scheduling system. A complete requirements document and PostgreSQL database design are already in place. This role will turn them into a working application, starting with the estimating module, and connect it to our existing business systems.
You will work daily with AI coding tools, and review and test everything they produce. You will also work directly with our estimators, project managers and leadership to make sure the system fits how our work is actually done. This is a 12-month term position with the potential for extension.
You won't be working alone. Navacon's managed IT services partner provides senior developer mentorship and security and code review throughout the build.
Responsibilities
- Build the application's screens, workflows and business logic on an existing PostgreSQL database design, beginning with the estimating module (bid entry, crew-based costing, markup, and bid approval), with job cost tracking and crew and equipment scheduling to follow.
- Extend the database through version-controlled migrations as requirements change.
- Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code to implement features, and review,
test and verify all generated code before it is put into use.
- Write automated tests, especially for pricing and cost calculations.
- Implement and test role-based access control, so each user can see and change only the data their role allows.
- Connect the system to our existing business systems, including our accounting software, and migrate historical data from our current estimating software.
- Build screens that work on mobile devices for field staff.
- Meet with estimators, project managers and leadership to understand current processes and translate them into practical software.
- Take part in regular code and security reviews with our managed IT services partner's senior developer.
- Manage version control, environment configuration and deployment for the applications you build.
- Build in the audit-trail and backup requirements of a system that handles bid pricing and financial data.
- Document your work so that it can be maintained and extended.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or degree in software development, computer programming, computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or a related field.
- Hands-on project, co-op or work experience building and deploying a working web application.
- Solid SQL fundamentals, including joins, constraints and schema design. PostgreSQL experience is an asset.
- Working knowledge of a modern web framework (React and TypeScript preferred) and Git.
- Understanding of web application security basics, including authentication, authorization and input validation.
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools, and the discipline to verify their output.
- Ability to explain technical issues clearly to non-technical colleagues.
- Reliable transportation to our St. George office.
- The following are assets:
o Experience writing automated tests. o Experience with a cloud platform such as Supabase, Vercel, AWS or Azure, including row-level security.
o Experience with system integrations or data migration.
o Experience with responsive or mobile-first design.
o Experience building dashboards or data visualizations.
o Exposure to construction, estimating or ERP-type systems.
Compensation & Benefits
- $65,000 – $75,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
- 12-month term with potential for extension.
- Opportunity to build the application from the ground up and see it used daily by our estimating and project teams.
- Ongoing training and support.
- Employee appreciation events and recognition programs.
