About Gerry’s Roofing & Siding
Gerry’s Roofing & Siding is a growing residential construction company based in Hamilton, Ontario. We have approximately 50 employees across sales, production, administration, finance, marketing and field operations, and we plan to continue growing significantly over the coming years.
As we grow, we need an experienced HR professional who can take ownership of the people side of the business and build an HR function that can scale with us.
Our core values are Excellence, Integrity, Teamwork and Accountability. We are looking for someone who can help us consistently apply those standards across the company.
The Role
We are hiring a Senior Human Resources Generalist to become the in-house owner of HR for Gerry’s.
This is not primarily an administrative HR position, and it is not a remote advisory role. You will work directly with the President and management team while also being a trusted resource for employees.
You will be responsible for both strategy and execution.
That means recruiting people, coaching managers, dealing with difficult employee situations, improving our policies and systems, keeping us compliant, supporting health and safety, improving onboarding and helping us build a stronger organization.
We want someone who sees a problem, takes ownership of it and drives it to completion.
What You’ll Own
Recruiting and Talent Acquisition
- Manage full-cycle recruiting for office, sales, management and field positions.
- Write and post job advertisements, source candidates, screen applicants and coordinate interviews.
- Conduct initial interviews and reference checks.
- Prepare offers and support new-hire onboarding.
- Build a consistent recruiting process and pipeline instead of simply reacting when vacancies occur.
- Track recruiting metrics including time-to-fill, source of hire and new-hire retention.
Employee Relations
- Serve as the primary HR resource for employees and managers.
- Handle employee complaints, workplace concerns and routine investigations.
- Advise management on attendance, conduct, performance and disciplinary matters.
- Prepare warnings, performance improvement plans and other employee documentation.
- Support and participate in termination meetings.
- Recognize situations that require outside employment-law advice and coordinate with counsel when appropriate.
Manager Coaching and Performance
- Coach managers on difficult conversations, documentation and employee accountability.
- Improve consistency in how performance issues are handled across departments.
- Help managers establish expectations and address problems earlier.
- Support performance reviews, employee development and succession planning.
- Be willing to respectfully challenge management when the right HR decision is different from the easiest decision.
HR Compliance and Documentation
- Maintain compliance with applicable Ontario employment legislation.
- Review and maintain employment agreements, policies, employee handbook and HR documentation.
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee records.
- Manage leaves, accommodations, WSIB/return-to-work processes and related documentation.
- Coordinate with employment counsel where legal review is appropriate.
Health & Safety
- Support Ontario health-and-safety compliance from an HR and administrative perspective.
- Support the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Maintain required training and documentation.
- Support workplace violence and harassment policies and investigations.
- Work with operational leadership on health-and-safety initiatives.
Onboarding, Retention and Culture
- Improve onboarding and 30/60/90-day new-hire processes.
- Conduct or coordinate employee check-ins, stay interviews and exit interviews.
- Identify recurring causes of turnover or employee dissatisfaction.
- Help leadership turn company values into observable management and employee behaviours.
- Recommend practical improvements based on employee and organizational data.
HR Systems and Reporting
- Maintain and improve our HR systems and processes.
- Develop useful HR reporting for leadership.
- Track turnover, attendance, recruiting, performance-management activity and other meaningful people metrics.
- Establish an annual HR calendar and priorities.
- Build systems that will continue working as the company grows beyond its current size.
What Success Looks Like Within your first 90 days, we expect you to understand the business, identify our highest HR risks and begin correcting them while continuing to handle day-to-day HR needs.
You will not spend your first three months only studying the company. Assessment and execution need to happen at the same time.
Over your first year, success would include:
- A reliable and trusted internal HR function.
- Faster and more consistent recruiting.
- Stronger onboarding and new-hire retention.
- Better manager documentation and performance management.
- Current HR policies and employee records.
- Improved HR and health-and-safety compliance.
- Employee issues addressed promptly and professionally.
- Useful HR reporting for leadership.
- Less HR work requiring the President or other senior leaders to personally manage it.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of progressive Human Resources experience in a broad generalist role.
- Demonstrated experience owning employee relations, performance management and disciplinary matters.
- Strong full-cycle recruiting experience.
- Strong working knowledge of Ontario employment legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Experience drafting professional HR documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent judgment and discretion when dealing with confidential or sensitive matters.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and influence managers.
- Strong organization and follow-through.
- Comfortable working independently and taking ownership without requiring constant direction.
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
Strong Assets
- CHRP or CHRL designation,
or actively working toward one.
- Experience supporting construction, skilled trades, home services, manufacturing, distribution or another field-based workforce.
- Experience recruiting both professional and front-line employees.
- Experience with WSIB, return-to-work and accommodation matters.
- JHSC and health-and-safety experience.
- Experience supporting a growing owner-led or entrepreneurial company.
- Experience implementing or improving an HRIS.
The Person We’re Looking For The strongest candidate will be practical, organized and confident. You should be comfortable moving from interviewing a candidate in the morning, to coaching a manager through a performance issue, to reviewing a policy, to handling an employee complaint later the same day.
You need to be approachable enough that employees will speak with you, but solid enough to hold people accountable.
You should understand that good HR means protecting the company and treating employees fairly. Those objectives should normally support one another.
This role will suit someone who likes building and improving systems rather than simply maintaining an established corporate HR department.
