Job Purpose To provide dedicated control of vehicle, mobile equipment, pedestrian and material movements within the Scrap Metal Section. The Coordinator serves as the section’s designated banksman and movement-control focal point, maintaining safe and orderly traffic flow as scrap deliveries, customer/seller vehicles, trucks, forklifts, material handlers/grabbers, stackers and other mobile equipment operate within the same work area. The role is intended to remain focused on movement control, communication, access coordination and hazard prevention. It should not be treated as a general labour position that performs banksman duties only when available.

Key Responsibilities
Traffic and Access Control
• Control the entry, movement, positioning and exit of scrap metal sellers, customer vehicles, company trucks, contractors and other authorized vehicles within the Scrap Metal Section.
• Direct vehicles to designated queuing, weighing, inspection, unloading, loading, parking or exit areas and prevent uncontrolled movement through active operating zones.
• Maintain clear traffic routes, turning areas, emergency access routes, pedestrian walkways and equipment operating zones.
• Coordinate temporary traffic holds when mobile equipment is crossing, reversing, loading, unloading, repositioning or operating close to vehicle or pedestrian routes.
• Prevent unauthorized persons or vehicles from entering restricted areas and immediately escalate access or traffic-control concerns to the Scrap Metal Supervisor. Banksman and Mobile Equipment Movement Control
• Act as the designated banksman for reversing, maneuvering and blind-spot movements where a banksman is required.
• Coordinate movements of forklifts, material handlers/grabbers, stackers, loaders, excavators and other mobile plant within the section.
• Use approved hand signals, radio communication and agreed stop signals; maintain positive communication with operators before authorizing movement.
• Position safely outside equipment travel paths, swing radii, pinch/crush zones and suspended-load areas while maintaining clear visibility of the operator and movement area.
• Stop or suspend movement whenever pedestrians, vehicles, obstructions, poor visibility, unsafe loads or conflicting equipment movements create an unacceptable risk. Movements and Traffic Coordinator
- Scrap Metal Operations
• Ensure equipment movements are sequenced to reduce congestion and prevent two or more machines from creating conflicting travel or operating paths. Scrap Delivery, Loading and Unloading Coordination
• Coordinate the safe arrival and positioning of scrap metal sellers and incoming loads for inspection and unloading.
• Confirm that unloading/loading areas are clear, stable and ready before directing a vehicle or machine into position.
• Keep sellers,

drivers and other non-operational persons in designated safe waiting areas while unloading, sorting, compacting, shearing, stacking or machine handling is taking place.
• Coordinate with the Scrap Metal Supervisor and equipment operators on where incoming materials are to be placed so that traffic lanes and operating spaces remain clear.
• Assist in controlling truck/container loading activities, including safe approach, positioning, exclusion zones and departure from the section. Pedestrian and Exclusion-Zone Control
• Enforce designated pedestrian routes, crossings and restricted zones within the Scrap Metal Section.
• Prevent pedestrians from walking behind reversing equipment, through active loading/unloading areas, beneath suspended loads or within the operating/swing radius of mobile equipment.
• Establish and maintain temporary exclusion zones during higher-risk movements or activities and only reopen the area when safe.
• Pay particular attention to visitors, scrap sellers and drivers who may be unfamiliar with site traffic rules. Communication and Operational Coordination
• Maintain continuous communication with the Scrap Metal Supervisor, equipment operators, drivers, security/gate personnel and other relevant staff regarding planned and ongoing movements.
• Coordinate competing movement requests and establish a safe sequence of operations when multiple vehicles or machines require access to the same area.
• Immediately communicate abnormal conditions such as congestion, blocked routes, unsafe stacking affecting movement, spills, poor ground conditions, damaged barriers/signage or equipment defects observed during movement control.
• Participate in pre-shift or daily coordination discussions so expected deliveries, container movements, heavyequipment activities and unusual traffic can be planned in advance. Safety, Housekeeping and Compliance Monitoring
• Conduct a basic pre-shift check of traffic routes, pedestrian paths, barriers, cones, signage, lighting, visibility and designated unloading/loading areas.
• Ensure movement controls are maintained during wet weather, low-light conditions, congestion or changes to the normal site layout.
• Report and, where authorized, correct obstructions or housekeeping conditions that interfere with safe traffic flow.
• Ensure persons entering controlled operating areas comply with required PPE and site instructions.
• Exercise stop-work authority for unsafe movements and report repeated or serious non-compliance to the Scrap Metal Supervisor and QHSE Department. Records and Reporting

• Maintain a simple daily movement/traffic log where required, including unusual deliveries, traffic conflicts, near misses, access-control issues and significant equipment movements. Movements and Traffic Coordinator
- Scrap Metal Operations
• Report near misses, unsafe acts, traffic violations, damaged traffic-control devices and recurring congestion points for corrective action.
• Provide input to incident investigations, traffic reviews, risk assessments and changes to the Scrap Metal Section layout or movement plan. Authority
• To stop any vehicle, pedestrian or mobile-equipment movement that presents an immediate safety risk.
• To delay entry, unloading, loading or movement until the route/area is safe and conflicting activities are controlled.
• To establish temporary exclusion zones and request barriers, cones or additional assistance where required.
• To escalate repeated non-compliance or operational conflicts to the Scrap Metal Supervisor, Operations Manager and/or QHSE Department. Minimum Competency Requirements
• Formal banksman/spotter and traffic-control training, including standardized hand signals and radio communication.
• Practical understanding of mobile-equipment blind spots, reversing hazards, swing radii, pinch/crush zones and suspended-load hazards.
• Knowledge of the Scrap Metal Section layout, traffic plan, pedestrian routes, loading/unloading areas, emergency routes and restricted zones.
• Ability to remain alert for extended periods, communicate firmly and respectfully, and give clear instructions to operators, drivers, sellers and visitors.
• Basic incident/hazard reporting skills and understanding of stop-work authority.
• Fit to perform outdoor duties in the prevailing work environment and able to maintain visibility to operators while remaining in a protected position. Key Performance Expectations
• Safe and orderly flow of vehicles, mobile equipment and pedestrians within the Scrap Metal Section.
• No uncontrolled reversing or conflicting equipment movements in areas under the Coordinator’s control.
• Consistent enforcement of pedestrian routes, exclusion zones and seller/visitor movement requirements.
• Timely reporting and escalation of traffic hazards, near misses and recurring congestion issues.
• Effective coordination with operators and supervisors without being routinely diverted to unrelated labour tasks during active movement-control periods. Required PPE / Work Equipment
• High-visibility vest or other designated high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, hard hat, safety glasses and any additional PPE required for the Scrap Metal Section.
• Two-way radio or other approved communication device.
• Whistle, traffic paddle/baton, cones or portable barriers where these are included in the site traffic-control system
