Job Title: Mechanical Engineer
This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on designing and supporting specialized industrial equipment and automation systems, including conveyor systems, automation cells, and mechanical systems used in radioactive and nuclear environments. You will contribute to the full lifecycle of mechanical design, from concept through validation and field implementation, while collaborating closely with experienced engineers and cross‑functional teams. The position combines design engineering, project coordination, and hands‑on troubleshooting, with significant exposure to international field work and advanced industrial technologies.
Responsibilities
- Design and support mechanical equipment, assemblies, and subsystems for industrial applications, including conveyor systems, automation cells, and equipment used in radioactive and nuclear environments.
- Provide mechanical design and design support, working with dedicated design and drafting resources to create and refine CAD models and drawings.
- Coordinate project activities, anticipate project needs, and help keep project delivery on track through effective project management and communication.
- Support field implementation and operation by troubleshooting mechanical issues that arise on‑site and off‑site, and developing practical solutions in real time.
- Perform direct field work, including on‑site and off‑site support, to oversee installation, commissioning, and performance of mechanical systems.
- Collaborate closely with experienced engineers to support their projects, assist in coordinating engineering activities, and help move deliverables forward.
- Take ownership of smaller subsystems,
leading the mechanical design work from concept through validation while ensuring alignment with overall system requirements.
- Apply solid mechanical problem‑solving skills to identify issues, develop solutions, and validate that designs function as intended under real‑world conditions.
- Use SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD tools to create detailed mechanical models, assemblies, and documentation that meet engineering standards.
- Participate in design reviews, incorporate feedback from experienced engineers, and ensure that all designs follow established design and validation processes.
- Travel internationally to customer or project sites to support installation, troubleshooting, and ongoing operation of mechanical and automation equipment.
- Maintain a high level of safety awareness and follow all training and procedures when working with equipment in radioactive and nuclear environments.
Essential Skills
- Proven experience in mechanical design engineering, specifically designing mechanical equipment, assemblies, or subsystems.
- Hands‑on troubleshooting experience in the field or off‑site, with the ability to debug and resolve mechanical problems in real time.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or a comparable 3D CAD package for mechanical design and modeling.
- Strong mechanical problem‑solving skills,
including understanding the full order of operations to take a mechanical design from concept to validated solution.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership of smaller subsystems and lead the mechanical design work independently while collaborating with engineers.
- Comfort working in specialized industrial applications, including environments associated with radioactive and nuclear equipment, with willingness to complete required training.
- Ability to travel internationally for up to approximately 60 days per year, including extended trips such as four consecutive weeks away from home.
- Eligibility and appropriate documentation for international travel and work, including a valid Canadian passport or equivalent travel documentation and compliance with visa requirements.
- Comfort thinking on your feet and making sound engineering decisions when unexpected issues arise during field work.
- Capacity to coordinate engineering activities and support project management tasks to keep deliverables on schedule.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with industrial equipment or automation systems, such as conveyor systems and automation cells, is a strong asset.
- Familiarity with nuclear or radioactive equipment environments, or a strong interest in learning and working in such settings.
- Experience with new product development in mechanical or automation‑related fields.
