About the Role Our client, a leader in specialty chemical manufacturing, is seeking an accomplished Principal Process Engineer with extensive experience in process scale-up to join their innovation hub in Kimberley, Northern Cape . This senior role is crucial for bridging the gap between laboratory research and commercial production, ensuring that new chemical processes are effectively and safely scaled. You will lead the technical aspects of scale-up projects, from pilot plant design and operation to full-scale plant implementation. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of chemical engineering principles, strong analytical capabilities, and a proven track record of successfully scaling complex processes. This hybrid position offers the opportunity to work on challenging projects, mentor junior engineers, and contribute significantly to the company's growth.
Key Responsibilities Lead the process scale-up activities for new chemical products and technologies.
Design, commission, and operate pilot plant facilities to validate process performance.
Develop detailed process designs, including PFDs, P&IDs;, and equipment specifications, for commercial scale.
Conduct thorough risk assessments and HAZOP studies for scaled-up processes.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges encountered during scale-up and initial plant operation.
Collaborate with R&D;, engineering, and operations teams to ensure seamless technology transfer.
Perform process simulations and modeling to predict performance at different scales.
Optimize processes for efficiency, yield, safety,



and cost-effectiveness at commercial scale.
Develop technical documentation, including process descriptions, validation protocols, and operating manuals.
Mentor and guide junior engineers and technical staff involved in scale-up projects.
Requirements M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from a reputable university.
A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in process development and scale-up.
Proven experience in designing and operating pilot plants.
Expertise in process simulation and modeling software.
Strong understanding of chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena.
Experience with process safety assessments (HAZOP, LOPA).
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead technical teams.
Experience in the specialty chemicals sector is highly preferred.
Ability to thrive in a hybrid work environment, balancing remote analysis with on-site pilot plant and facility engagement in Kimberley .
