WPI Railroad Services
Calgary
About the role
WPI Railroad Services supplies railway equipment, parts, training, and field service to major Canadian Class 1 railroads, short line railways, and contractors across Canada and the United States. As the exclusive Canadian field service representative for Encore Solutions and MOW Equipment Solutions, we support rail lifters, spike pullers, spikers, and other maintenance-of-way (MOW) equipment.
We're hiring a Calgary-based Field Service Mechanic to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair railway and MOW equipment at customer sites.
Railway experience is a strong asset, but it's not required. If you're a heavy duty or agricultural equipment mechanic, a construction or mining equipment mechanic, or a millwright who enjoys diagnostics and working independently in the field, we'll train you on our railway equipment. Experienced apprentices are also welcome to apply.
What we offer
- Base salary starting at $90,000 CAD, plus field bonuses of up to $30,000 per year (total earning potential of up to $120,000), based on performance and experience
- $75 per day meal allowance while travelling
- Company truck and fuel card provided
- Company laptop provided
- 3 weeks of annual vacation
- Hands-on field work with a wide variety of equipment — no two days are the same
What you'll do
- Install, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair railway and MOW equipment at customer locations
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues and complete effective repairs
- Perform preventive maintenance, equipment inspections, and fleet evaluations
- Provide technical support to customers and assist with operator and mechanic training
- Coordinate with parts and sales teams to resolve equipment issues
- Complete accurate service reports and documentation in a timely manner
- Follow company procedures, customer site requirements, and safety standards
Must have
- Strong mechanical experience servicing heavy equipment or industrial machinery — journeypersons and experienced apprentices will both be considered
- Working knowledge of hydraulic and basic electrical systems, and the ability to read technical manuals and schematics
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work independently, manage your time, and adapt to changing field conditions
- Explicit communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach
- Valid driver's licence and clean driving record
- Valid Canadian passport and ability to travel to the United States
- Ability to meet the physical demands of field work, including lifting, climbing, and working outdoors
- A consistent commitment to safe work practices
Nice to have
- Railway maintenance-of-way or engineering services experience
- Relevant trade certification (heavy equipment technician, millwright, or related trade)
- Experience in construction, mining, agricultural, or other heavy equipment service
- French language skills
