SCOPE:
A highly motivated individual is sought for a full time position as a Sensor R&D; Engineer. The primary duties involve the design, development, testing, and optimization of capacitive sensor-based systems, products, and modules for NZTech’s proprietary sensing technologies.
The successful candidate will develop a deep understanding of capacitive sensing principles and translate that knowledge into practical sensor designs, test methodologies, and iterative improvements. This role sits at the intersection of electrical design, applied physics, and R&D; – and carries real engineering ownership from day one.
ABOUT NZ TECHNOLOGIES INC:
Established in 2009, NZ Technologies Inc. (NZTech) works in the field of Human Machine Interaction (HMI) with specializations in touchless capacitive sensors, embedded systems, intelligent interaction design, and innovation. NZTech’s software and hardware are designed and assembled in-house at our office in Vancouver, BC. Our core platforms (TIPSO™ and HoverTap™) are proprietary technologies developed through extensive engineering research and real-world deployment experience. TIPSO™ is designed to enable surgeons interacting with radiology images in the Operating Room. HoverTap™ replaces touchscreens to enable touch and touchless interactions on existing screens, displays, and rugged surfaces across various environments where touchscreens fail.
As NZTech scales its deployments and expands its sensor platform capabilities, continued innovation in sensor design and embedded electronics optimization is a strategic priority. This role is central to that effort.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
NZTech is looking for a technically curious and hands-on engineer who can design, build, and test capacitive sensor systems while also contributing to the broader R&D; direction of the sensing platform. The role will focus on sensor design, fabrication and evaluation, testing and experimentation,
and the design/development of related electronics.
The ideal candidate has a strong electrical engineering foundation, comfortable with PCB design, low-level hardware, and firmware interaction, and brings an R&D; mindset that goes beyond executing a defined process. They should be willing to question assumptions, explore new solutions and sensing architectures, and work closely with the wider engineering team to push the boundaries of what our sensors can detect and how reliably they do so.
This is not a pure production or sustaining engineering role. The candidate must be comfortable with ambiguity, iterative experimentation, and working in a small team where their contributions have direct product impact.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design and develop capacitive sensors of various form-factors for HoverTap™ and TIPSO™ platforms
- Calibrate and tune sensor systems to perform optimally for specific customer applications and deployment environments
- Build, maintain, and improve sensor test platforms to collect structured performance and benchmark data
- Conduct electrostatic simulations, controlled experiments, and empirical hardware testing to validate and iterate on sensor design improvements
- Design PCBs and related electronics integrating sensor controllers, power management, and communication interfaces (USB, Bluetooth, I2C, SPI)
- Evaluate and specify electronics components to identify performance advantages and opportunities
- Work closely with the firmware team to validate sensor firmware, state machines,
and communication protocols
- Collaborate with the engineering team on sensor data collection, benchmarking datasets, and sensing performance metrics
- Maintain hardware system documentation, design flowcharts, and test procedures
- Support hardware assembly, prototyping, and manufacturing processes
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
The prospective candidate should have the following skills/experience:
- A university degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field
- 2–4 years of relevant experience in hardware design, PCB layout, or sensor development
- Demonstrated experience with PCB design tools (KiCad, Altium, Eagle, or equivalent)
- Solid understanding of analog and digital circuit design fundamentals
- Familiarity with capacitive sensing principles, electrode design, or sensor array architecture
- Experience with embedded communication protocols (I2C, SPI, USB, UART)
- Comfortable working with microcontrollers and reading/writing embedded C/C++ code
- Strong troubleshooting, experimentation, and problem-solving instincts – able to diagnose hardware-software interactions and iterate systematically
- Self-motivated, ownership-driven, and comfortable in a small engineering team
- Strong documentation and communication skills
Bonus Qualifications:
- Experience with touchscreen design or development
- Hands-on experience calibrating or tuning sensors for real-world deployment environments
- Familiarity with electrostatic simulation tools (ANSYS, COMSOL, or similar)
- Interest in or exposure to machine learning applied to sensor data
Pay: $80,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Casual dress
- Company events
- Dental care
- Disability insurance
- Extended health care
- Flexible schedule
- Paid time off
- Vision care
- Work from home
