Executive Underwriter, Commercial Auto

We are seeking a highly experienced Executive Underwriter – Commercial Auto (10+
years’ experience) to join our underwriting team at HDI Global SE Canada Branch.

This senior role is responsible for underwriting, managing, and developing a
profitable portfolio of commercial auto risks, while contributing to the growth and
development of our Auto line of business in Canada. The successful candidate will
play a key role in shaping underwriting strategy, strengthening broker relationships,
and building sustainable portfolio performance aligned with global standards.

Your Responsibilities

Underwriting & Risk Assessment

 Underwrite and manage new and renewal commercial auto business, ensuring alignment with HDI
underwriting standards, risk appetite, and pricing frameworks.

 Apply sound underwriting judgment across transactions, including more complex or large exposures
within delegated authority.

 Provide guidance and oversight into underwriting decisions within the team, escalating complex risks
as required.

 Support and lead broker and client negotiations to secure profitable and sustainable business unities.

Portfolio Management and Performance Management

 Take accountability for the performance of the commercial auto portfolio, including profitability,
growth, retention, and exposure management.

 Monitor portfolio trends, identify emerging risks and opportunities, and implement corrective actions
where required.

 Contribute to portfolio planning, forecasting, and regular performance reviews in line with business
objectives.

Strategy and Market Awareness

 Execute the local commercial auto underwriting strategy in alignment with global direction and
business priorities.

 Provide market insights and contribute to the refinement of underwriting approach, appetite, and
portfolio mix.

 Support the development and enhancement of the commercial auto line of business in Canada.

Governance, Compliance and Technical Excellence

 Ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and regulatory requirements.
 Maintain high standards of underwriting quality, documentation, and data integrity.
 Support audit processes and ensure compliance with internal governance frameworks.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Management

 Build and maintain solid relationships with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders to support
business growth.





 Act as a key point of contact within the underwriting function, providing technical expertise and
guidance.

 Collaborate with global underwriting teams to ensure consistency, alignment, and knowledge sharing.

Business Development & Market Presence

 Support and contribute to broker engagement and business development initiatives.
 Strengthen market presence by promoting HDI’s commercial auto capabilities and value proposition.

Your Profile (Skills, Qualifications & Experience)

 10+ years of progressive underwriting experience, with a strong focus on commercial auto
 Demonstrated expertise in commercial underwriting practices, including risk assessment, pricing,

portfolio management, and coverage structuring
 Strong understanding of the Canadian commercial insurance market, broker landscape, and

applicable regulatory requirements
 Proven ability to manage and optimize underwriting portfolios, balancing profitability, growth, and

risk exposure
 Solid track record in handling complex or large commercial auto risks within delegated authority levels
 Highly developed analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess risk and make sound,

data-driven underwriting decisions
 Strong broker-facing and relationship management capabilities, with the ability to negotiate

effectively and drive business outcomes
 Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate across

internal teams and with global underwriting counterparts
 Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic, and collaborative environment, with a strong

sense of ownership and accountability
 Sound understanding of underwriting governance, compliance standards, and internal control

frameworks
 Entrepreneurial mindset with a proven ability and strong willingness to establish and continuously

develop the Auto infrastructure in collaboration with key internal stakeholders
