Role Overview
The client is seeking a highly experienced SRE & Observability Engineer to lead the assessment, design, and architecture of a next-generation observability platform across a multi-cloud ecosystem.
This individual will act as a trusted advisor to Cloud Operations, Application, Platform Engineering, Security, and Architecture teams. The successful candidate will conduct a comprehensive review of the client's cloud landscape spanning Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), identify monitoring gaps, and develop a strategic observability roadmap aligned with operational excellence and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles.
The consultant will define the target-state architecture, operating model, standards, tooling strategy, alerting framework, SLO/SLI methodology, AIOps capabilities, and implementation roadmap required to establish a scalable enterprise observability practice.
Key Objectives & Responsibilities
1. Discovery & Assessment
- Perform a comprehensive assessment of the client's cloud footprint across Azure, AWS, GCP, and OCI.
- Inventory existing monitoring, logging, tracing, and operational tooling.
- Evaluate current observability maturity, coverage levels, operational processes, and monitoring effectiveness.
- Identify blind spots, tool duplication, alert fatigue drivers, and operational inefficiencies.
- Review current incident management, escalation, and service restoration workflows.
2. Observability Strategy
- Define an enterprise-wide observability vision and strategy.
- Establish observability standards, governance, and architectural principles.
- Recommend tooling strategy and vendor rationalization where appropriate.
- Create a multi-year roadmap with prioritized implementation phases.
3. Architecture & Design
- Design a centralized enterprise observability architecture.
- Define standards for:
- Metrics collection
- Distributed tracing
- Log aggregation
- Synthetic monitoring
- Infrastructure monitoring
- Application Performance Monitoring (APM)
- Network observability
- Cloud-native service monitoring
- Define observability patterns for:
- Kubernetes
- Containers
- Serverless workloads
- Databases
- API platforms
4. SRE & Reliability Engineering
- Define Service Level Indicators (SLIs).
- Establish Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
- Recommend proactive monitoring and resilience patterns.
- Design strategies to reduce Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR) and improve operational reliability.
5. AIOps & Automation
- Assess opportunities for intelligent observability and AIOps.
- Design event correlation and noise reduction strategies.
- Recommend automated root-cause analysis capabilities.
- Define predictive monitoring and capacity forecasting approaches.
- Create an automation roadmap for incident detection and remediation.
6. Executive Deliverables
Produce the following deliverables:
- Current-state assessment
- Gap analysis report
- Target-state architecture
- Implementation roadmap
