Tomahawk
Ranch Office & Business Administrator
Shoal Creek Ranch / Taillieu Cattle Co. Ltd.
Tomahawk, Alberta | Full-Time
Shoal Creek Ranch is looking for a capable, organized and motivated person to join our operation as a Ranch Office & Business Administrator.
This is not simply a receptionist or data-entry position. We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the day-to-day administrative and bookkeeping side of a progressive cattle and ranching operation and grow into a key member of our management team.
We are also looking for someone who is excited about new technology and innovation in agriculture. We want this person to help us identify, evaluate and implement new technologies that can make our ranch more efficient, better organized and easier to manage.
Responsibilities
The position will include:
● Day-to-day bookkeeping and financial record keeping
● Accounts payable and accounts receivable
● Preparing invoices and organizing vendor statements
● Payroll and employee records
● Bank and credit-card reconciliations
● Maintaining organized electronic and paper records
● Assisting with cattle purchase, sale and inventory records
● Maintaining livestock information and digital records, including AgriWebb
● Assisting with RFID and cattle traceability records
● Maintaining equipment, inventory and operational records
● Preparing spreadsheets, reports and management information
● Working with our accountant and other professional advisors
● Government, livestock-industry and regulatory paperwork
● Helping develop better administrative systems and procedures for the ranch
● General office administration and coordination
● Researching new agricultural and business technologies that could improve the operation
● Helping evaluate new software, equipment and digital systems
● Finding practical ways to connect information between different ranch systems
● Helping implement new technology and ensuring it is actually useful to the people working with it
● Looking for opportunities to automate repetitive administrative tasks and improve the flow of information between the ranch, office and management
The position can expand considerably depending on the individual’s abilities and interests.
Who We’re Looking For
A strong candidate could be a recent graduate or someone with several years of experience.
Education in one or more of the following would be an asset:
● Agribusiness
● Agricultural management
● Accounting
● Bookkeeping
● Business administration
● Office administration
Agricultural or cattle experience is a significant asset, but we are equally interested in someone with excellent accounting and administrative abilities who wants to build a career in agriculture.
The successful candidate should be comfortable with computers and willing to learn new systems. Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting software are particularly valuable.
We are especially interested in someone who enjoys technology, is curious about new ideas and gets excited about finding better ways to do things.
We don’t expect this person to already know every system we use. We want someone who is willing to research new technology, learn it, experiment with it and help us determine how it can be effectively applied in a real-world ranch workplace.
Above all, we’re looking for someone who is organized, accurate, trustworthy, curious and capable of taking responsibility for their area of the business.
Opportunity for Growth
Our objective is to find someone who can develop beyond an entry-level administrative position.
For the right person, this role could grow into responsibility for much of the ranch’s business administration, financial reporting, record systems, technology implementation and office management.
As the ranch adopts more technology, we see this person playing an important role in helping connect our financial, livestock, employee, equipment and operational information so management has better information available when making decisions.
We are looking for someone interested in becoming an important long-term member of the operation rather than simply filling an office position.
Compensation
Competitive salary based on education, experience and capabilities.
Benefits and other employment arrangements can be discussed with qualified candidates.
