About us

Motion Steel is a structural steel fabricator and erector based in Calgary, part of the Cyntech Group. We do drafting, shop fabrication and field erection in-house on institutional, infrastructure and commercial projects like commercial buildings, churches, schools, water treatment plants, multi-family residential buildings, etc.

We are looking for a Field Operations Manager to run our erection and installation side.

About the role

The Field Operations Manager reports to the VP of Operations and has four site foremen as direct reports. The role covers planning and sequencing field work, managing the erection schedule, leading the field crew, and overall responsibility for the field department’s budget and spending. An office-based Project Coordinator supports the role by documenting and maintaining the plan in our project management system.

Approximately 95% of our work is in Calgary, with occasional projects in surrounding communities. We are non-union and have had twelve months per year of steady work throughout our history.

What you will do

- Lead and develop four site foremen and the field crew
- Plan and sequence field work across all active projects and manage the erection schedule
- Review and confirm site readiness before crews mobilize, including access, laydown, foundations, anchor bolts, preceding trades and any hold points
- Conduct a pre-job review for each project so the crew understands the scope, the sequence, the plan and any known site conditions before they arrive
- Make sure crews have current drawings, erection plans and all required documentation on site before work starts
- Forecast crew and equipment requirements and assign people and equipment to projects

- Manage the overall field department budget, including labour, equipment, tooling and vehicle spending
- Track field productivity and cost against budgeted hours, report variances, and take corrective action
- Coordinate with drafting, the shop and project management so field has what it needs when it needs it
- Visit sites regularly to stay current on progress and conditions
- Manage field safety performance, including site inspections, toolbox talks and incident follow-up
- Manage customer and general contractor relationships in the field, including changes and site coordination
- Manage field hiring, training and performance alongside company leadership
- Maintain equipment, trucks and tooling, and plan replacement in advance of failure
- Direct the Project Coordinator on documentation and scheduling administration

What we are looking for

- Significant structural steel erection experience, ideally including time on the tools
- Supervisory experience leading foremen or multiple crews
- Experience managing a departmental or project budget, and a explicit understanding of how field hours and spending translate into cost
- Able to identify site readiness issues and schedule conflicts early, and resolve them with the general contractor before they cost us time
- Strong understanding of rigging, hoisting,

connections and erection sequencing
- Able to read and work from structural drawings and erection plans
- Able to build and maintain a realistic schedule across several concurrent projects
- Journeyman ironworker ticket, CSTS, fall protection and relevant safety training are assets
- Valid Class 5 licence and a clean driver’s abstract
- Clear and consistent communication with both leadership and field crews

What we offer

- Competitive salary based on experience, reviewed annually
- Annual cost of living increase plus a separate merit-based review every year
- Annual profit sharing bonus
- RRSP matching up to 5%
- Health spending account of $4,000 per year per family
- A vacation policy that’s more generous than most
- Company truck, phone and laptop
- Steady, year-round work. We do not lay off in the fall
- Properly maintained trucks, tools and equipment
- Authority to run the field, with support from company leadership

Safety and fitness for duty

We take site safety seriously and we expect everyone to be fit for duty and not impaired in any way. This role sets the standard for the field crew and is expected to hold it.
