Description
As a Senior Technical Designer, you will turn design intent into working gameplay on a first-person, story-driven action game. You will implement both systemic and bespoke mechanics in Blueprints for every team on the project, from Level and Encounter Design to Narrative, AI, and Engineering, while cleaning up and optimizing existing Blueprints to keep the game’s foundation stable and performant.
You are exactly who we need if you love making systems work, and making them understandable. You create debug tools that reveal how systemic content behaves and give the team control over how it flows. In other words, you are not just wiring up mechanics — you are helping everyone build better experiences.
Requirements
- 6+ years of professional experience in Technical Design, Gameplay Scripting, or a related role on AA/AAA PC or console titles.
- At least one shipped title with responsibility for implementing gameplay mechanics or systemic features.
- Expert-level proficiency in Unreal Engine 4.27 Blueprints, including the gameplay framework, components, interfaces, event dispatchers, and data-driven setups.
- Proven track record of implementing both systemic and bespoke gameplay mechanics, from prototype to shippable quality.
- Strong experience refactoring, cleaning up, and optimizing existing Blueprints for readability, maintainability, and runtime performance.
- Experience building debug tools, visualizers, and console/cheat commands that report system state and help teams diagnose and control gameplay behavior.
- Solid understanding of Blueprint performance best practices — tick management, hard vs. soft references, casting, and memory footprint.
- Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills — you work well with Game Design,
Level Design, Narrative, Animation, AI, and Engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Implement systemic gameplay mechanics in Blueprints that support player creativity, experimentation, and multiple playstyles.
- Build bespoke gameplay mechanics and scripted moments in support of level, encounter, and narrative needs.
- Partner with all teams — Level Design, Encounter Design, Narrative, AI, Animation, and Engineering — to turn design intent into robust, reusable in-engine functionality.
- Audit, clean up, and refactor existing Blueprints to improve structure, readability, and maintainability.
- Profile and optimize Blueprint content to resolve performance bottlenecks and reduce technical debt.
- Design and build debug tools that report systemic behaviors, surfacing system state and interactions in a explicit, actionable way.
- Create tools and controls that allow the team to control and adjust the flow of systemic content during development and testing.
- Proactively debug, fix, and polish gameplay issues across owned features, and support other teams in troubleshooting.
- Participate in regular playtests and feedback sessions, iterating on mechanics based on internal feedback and design intent.
- Maintain clear documentation for systems, tools, and Blueprint architecture so the wider team can use and extend them.
Nice to have
- Experience on immersive sims, systemic shooters, or narrative-heavy games with deeply interconnected systems.
- Working knowledge of C++ in Unreal Engine, including exposing functionality to Blueprints.
- Familiarity with Unreal profiling tools such as Unreal Insights, the Blueprint Profiler, and stat commands.
- Experience with data-driven design using Data Assets, Data Tables, and Gameplay Tags.
