Mitrex - Building-Integrated Solar Technology

Toronto

Company Description

Mitrex is the world's largest manufacturer of Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV). We manufacture solar facades, cladding, railings, roof panels, and noise barriers that turn building envelopes into clean energy generators. Cladify is our rainscreen and architectural cladding systems brand.

We manufacture ventilated rainscreen assemblies in porcelain, ACM, and stone-composite materials — along with subframing systems like Cladishield — that give architects design flexibility without compromising building envelope performance. Mitrex holds ISO 9001, ISO 10002 and ISO 10004 certifications — the only BIPV manufacturer to do so.

Together, our projects range from healthcare and education campuses to high-rise residential and infrastructure. We deliver to general contractors as a supply partner and, on select projects, as a supply-and-install partner.

Position: Design Lead — Facade Detailing

Reports to:

Engineering/Drafting Manager

Position Type:

Full-time

Location:

41 Racine Road, Etobicoke (Toronto), ON — in office

Compensation:

$85K–110K (based on experience)

Position Summary

We're growing our drafting team and need a Design Lead to lead it. You'll be the team's direct technical leader — the primary point of contact for clients on façade and cladding shop drawing questions, the person who plans and assigns drafting work across the team, sets priorities, and owns quality control on every drafter's shop drawings before they go out the door. You'll field the team's day-to-day technical queries and develop drafters' skills over time — while still carrying your own drafting workload on live projects across both brands.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role: you lead by setting direction and reviewing the team's work, and by being in AutoCAD yourself alongside them.

Job Responsibilities

Team Leadership

- Lead the drafting team day to day: set priorities, assign work across both Mitrex (BIPV) and Cladify (rainscreen) projects, and hold drafters accountable for quality and deadlines
- Decide how detailing work is distributed across the team based on drafter experience, project complexity, and brand
- Field the team's technical queries, unblock them on detailing problems,

and coach drafters to build their skills
- Flag resourcing or workload issues to the Engineering/Drafting Manager

Client & Technical Liaison

- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for clients, architects, and consultants across both brands
- Act as the client-facing technical lead on high-profile Mitrex BIPV projects, including North America's largest BIPV installation and Guinness World Record façades, and on Cladify rainscreen projects
- Process architect/consultant review comments and issue clouded revisions with clean revision logs

Quality Control & Sign-Off

- Conduct quality control review on all drafters' shop drawings, panel layout/optimization drawings, and installation details before issue — you are the final technical sign-off before drawings leave the team
- Own technical direction and final QC sign-off on Mitrex BIPV electrical integration detailing (junction box locations, wire routing, connector access, string layouts)
- Own technical direction and final QC sign-off on Cladify ventilated rainscreen assembly details, open- and closed-joint systems, and mixed-material elevations
- Verify field dimensions against as-builts and flag discrepancies before fabrication release

Drafting & Documentation

- Prepare and review shop drawings, panel layout and optimization drawings, and installation details from architectural/structural sets and field surveys
- Detail and oversee attachment systems, subframing (Cladishield and related systems), flashings, copings, penetrations, and interfaces with adjacent trades
- Set the standard for how Cladify panel modulation and joint patterns are coordinated with architectural design intent, resolving yield/fabrication trade-offs the team can't settle on their own
- Oversee fabrication tickets, cut lists, and BOMs coordinated with production, panel numbering, and shipping sequences

- Maintain drawing registers and document control standards across projects

Compliance & Certification

- Hold the team accountable for Mitrex drawings tied to certification and AHJ requirements (UL, IEC, ESA); escalate compliance risks to engineering before fabrication release

Qualifications

- Diploma in architectural technology, drafting, or structural technology (or equivalent experience)
- 7–10+ years producing fabrication-ready shop drawings in façade, cladding, or curtain wall systems — this is the primary bar for the role
- Demonstrated ability to handle client-facing technical calls independently: fielding architect/consultant questions, defending detailing decisions, and resolving issues in real time
- Strong AutoCAD proficiency is essential; Inventor, SolidWorks, or Revit an asset
- Fluency reading architectural and structural sets and envelope details
- Working knowledge of fabrication tolerances, thermal movement, and OBC/envelope fundamentals; solar or electrical drawing exposure a plus but not required — we'll train the BIPV layer
- Experience leading, mentoring, or QC-reviewing other drafters' work is an asset but not a strict requirement — shop-drawing depth and client-call competence matter more than formal team-management tenure
- Ability to run multiple concurrent projects to deadline with high accuracy while still carrying a personal drafting workload

Why Mitrex

- Vertically integrated manufacturer — your drawings go straight to our own factory floor, and you see them built
- ISO 9001, ISO 10002 and ISO 10004 certified — a quality system no other BIPV manufacturer holds
- Landmark project portfolio in Canada, the US, and the Middle East
- Growth-stage company investing heavily in new products and technology
- A chance to help build out and shape a growing drafting team, not just execute within an existing one
- Market-competitive salary, benefits, and growth path into senior detailing or engineering coordination

Mitrex/Cladify is an equal-opportunity employer that welcomes all candidates from diverse backgrounds. Accommodations are available upon request for candidates participating in all aspects of the selection process.
